Who's who
- Xu Lanxiang / Shen Jialan (Tan Songyun): a scholar's granddaughter raised to run a great house, now a third-grade maid with a forged name. She is quiet, observant and practical, and she survives by being underestimated.
- Lin Jinqi (Liu Xueyi): the Lin heir, who went to the army for six years rather than live as the Zhao family's puppet. He is reserved and calculating, and much gentler than the novel's version of him.
