Who's who
- Xiao Yao (Yang Zi): the lost princess, funny and guarded, who would rather run than rely on anyone. Her mother left her, and everything she does is shaped by it.
- Cang Xuan (Zhang Wanyi): her cousin and childhood companion, a prince raised as a hostage. He is ambitious, patient and willing to sacrifice almost anything for the throne.
- Tushan Jing (Deng Wei): the gentle heir of the fox clan, first seen as the battered servant Ye Shiqi. He loves Xiao Yao completely but is bound by duty and an old engagement.
- Xiang Liu (Tan Jianci): a white-haired nine-headed demon who serves a defeated rebel army out of loyalty. He threatens Xiao Yao, bites her and protects her, sometimes in the same scene.
- Ah Nian (Dai Luwa): Xiao Yao's half-sister in Haoling, petulant but sincere, who has loved Cang Xuan since childhood.
- Chishui Fenglong (Wang Hongyi): a cheerful, ambitious clan leader and Cang Xuan's chief ally.
Identity Reveals
Ending spoilerShow identity reveals
The drama is built on hidden identities. Wen Xiaoliu is Xiao Yao, the missing princess, hidden under a face-changing spell. The broken man she calls Ye Shiqi is Tushan Jing, heir of the Tushan clan, who was imprisoned and tortured by his brother. The idle nobleman Fangfeng Bei is Xiang Liu in disguise. Late in season 1, Xiao Yao also learns the truth about her own parentage, which explains why her mother left and why her blood is so valuable.
