Who's who
- Cheng Shaoshang (Zhao Lusi): resourceful, practical and blunt, she is good at engineering and bad at etiquette. Her parents' long absence left her doubting that anyone could love her, and much of the drama is about her learning to trust.
- Ling Buyi (Wu Lei): the Emperor's foster son, commander of the palace guard and a man the court is afraid of. He is loyal to the Emperor and Empress and to almost no one else, and he carries a secret that drives everything he does.
- Xiao Yuanyi (Zeng Li): Shaoshang's mother, a brilliant military strategist and a stern parent. Their clashes and slow reconciliation are one of the drama's main threads.
- Cheng Shi (Guo Tao): her father, a cheerful general who adores his daughter and defers to his wife.
- Yuan Shen (Li Yunrui): an arrogant young scholar from a famous clan who loses every argument with Shaoshang and falls for her anyway.
- Lou Yao (Yu Cheng'en): her first fiancé, honest and sweet, from a family full of schemers.
- Empress Xuan (Tong Lei): the gentle, neglected Empress who raised Ling Buyi, and a refuge for Shaoshang in the palace.
Identity Reveals
Ending spoilerShow identity reveals
Ling Buyi's real name is Huo Wushang (霍无伤). As a five-year-old he survived the Gucheng massacre, in which the Huo army and family were destroyed, reportedly by trading clothes with a cousin who died in his place. He grew up under the Ling name in the palace, raised by the Emperor and Empress, while hiding who he was and what he knew about the betrayal. Sources describe his tie to the Ling household and to Huo Junhua differently, so we're not spelling out his parentage here until we can confirm how the drama presents it. The truth comes out in the second part, and it is what makes his revenge plot, and his engagement to Shaoshang, so fraught.
