Who's who
- Mei Changsu (Hu Ge): head of the Jiangzuo Alliance and the man every faction wants as an adviser. Courteous, ill and always three moves ahead, he hides a secret that the drama reveals to viewers early on.
- Xiao Jingyan, Prince Jing (Wang Kai): the emperor's seventh son, a blunt soldier who has spent years on the frontier because he refuses to forget an old injustice. He doesn't trust Mei Changsu's methods.
- Princess Nihuang (Liu Tao): commander of the southern army and one of the few women in the drama who holds real military power. She was engaged to Lin Shu before the massacre.
- Prince Yu (Huang Weide): the fifth prince, raised by the empress, smart and ruthless, and the Crown Prince's main rival.
- The Crown Prince, Xiao Jingxuan (Gao Xin): the fourth prince, weaker than his rival and backed by the Marquis of Ningguo.
- The Emperor of Liang (Ding Yongdai): a ruler whose fear of disloyalty caused the original tragedy and who still punishes anyone who reminds him of it.
- Lin Chen (Jin Dong) and Fei Liu (Wu Lei): Mei Changsu's physician-friend and his young bodyguard, who bring most of the drama's light moments.
- Xie Yu (Liu Yijun) and Xia Jiang (Wang Yongquan): two of the most powerful men at court, with a shared past.
Identity Reveals
Ending spoilerShow identity reveals
The central reveal is that Mei Changsu is Lin Shu, the Chiyan Army officer everyone believes died at Meiling. Viewers learn it early; the characters find out one by one, and each discovery changes an alliance. There are smaller secrets too. Prince Yu learns that his birth mother was a woman from a destroyed rival kingdom, which feeds his decision to rebel. Xiao Jingrui's parentage is not what the Ningguo household has told him. Xia Dong's husband, Nie Feng, turns out to be alive, changed by the same poison as Lin Shu.
