Who's who
- Fan Changyu (Tian Xiwei): a butcher in Lin'an's Xigu Lane who raises her sister after their parents' deaths. Strong, blunt and good with a blade, she goes from defending her stall to leading troops, and the court later honors her as the Flower-Pinned General (簪花将军).
- Xie Zheng (Zhang Linghe): the Marquis of Wu'an, cold and ruthless on the battlefield, who spends the first part of the drama as "Yan Zheng," a polite scholar living in Changyu's house as her husband.
- Li Huai'an (Ren Hao): the grandson of Grand Tutor Li, a courtly young man who helps Changyu often and watches Xie Zheng with suspicion. His grandfather's ambitions pull him onto the other side later.
- Yu Qianqian (Kong Xueer): a sharp, independent restaurant owner who arrived in Lin'an pregnant and alone, and who will do anything to keep her son away from his father.
- Qi Min (Deng Kai): a soft-spoken merchant with a burned past and an obsessive streak, and the drama's most talked-about villain.
- Gongsun Yin (Li Qing) and Qi Shu (Yu Zhongli): Xie Zheng's strategist friend and the princess who hides at his academy. Their slow romance is the drama's second love story.
- Wei Yan (Yan Kuan): the chancellor who holds the court and the man behind the attack on Xie Zheng, who is also his nephew.

Viewers know from the start that Yan Zheng is Xie Zheng. Changyu finds out in episode 26, after she drugs him, puts on his armor and leads his men herself. Yu Bao'er's father is Qi Min, which comes out around episodes 11 to 15. In episode 28, Qi Min turns out to be the emperor's eldest grandson, the heir of the old Eastern Palace who survived the fire that killed his parents. Prince Changxin raised him as his own eldest son, Sui Yuanhuai (随元淮). The reveal that matters most for Changyu comes in episode 30: the father she knew in Lin'an was Wei Qilin, the general blamed for the fall of Jinzhou, living under another name.
