Who's who
- Wei Wuxian (Xiao Zhan): the Jiang clan's adopted son, brilliant, funny and rule-breaking. He invents demonic cultivation, plays the flute Chenqing, and becomes the Yiling Patriarch, the most feared and blamed man in the cultivation world.
- Lan Wangji (Wang Yibo): the second young master of the strict Gusu Lan clan, quiet and principled. He disapproves of Wei Wuxian's path and still stands by him.
- Jiang Cheng (Wang Zhuocheng): Wei Wuxian's adoptive brother and heir to the Jiang clan, proud and quick to anger. Their falling-out is one of the drama's main threads.
- Jiang Yanli (Xuan Lu): Jiang Cheng's older sister, the gentle center of the Jiang family, whose lotus root soup Wei Wuxian never forgets.
- Wen Qing and Wen Ning (Meng Ziyi and Yu Bin): a sister and brother from a side branch of the Wen clan. She is a cool, brilliant doctor; he is shy and kind. Their lives become bound up with Wei Wuxian's.
- Lan Xichen (Liu Haikuan): Lan Wangji's warm older brother and head of the Lan clan, one of the three sworn brothers called the Three Zun.
- Jin Guangyao (Zhu Zanjin): born Meng Yao to a courtesan, the unacknowledged son of the Jin clan leader. Charming and capable, he climbs from nothing to become the third sworn brother.
- Nie Mingjue and Nie Huaisang (Wang Yizhou and Ji Li): the brothers of the Qinghe Nie clan. The elder is stern and fierce; the younger is easygoing, carries a fan everywhere and has little interest in cultivation.
- Jin Ling, Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi (Qi Peixin, Zheng Fanxing and Guo Cheng): the teenagers of the present-day story, who tag along on Wei Wuxian's investigations.
- Xue Yang, Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan (Wang Haoxuan, Song Jiyang and Li Bowen): the three men at the center of the Yi City arc, a largely self-contained story within the drama.
- Wen Ruohan (Xiu Qing): head of the Wen clan and the first half's main villain, who wants to rule the cultivation world.
Identity Reveals
Ending spoilerShow identity reveals
The first identity question is answered in episode one: Wei Wuxian is back, wearing Mo Xuanyu's body, and spends a while pretending to be the half-mad Mo Xuanyu. A Gusu tune he plays on a leaf already strikes one young Lan disciple as familiar. The bigger reveals, about who is behind the conspiracy and about one of the young Lan disciples, come in the last episodes and are covered in the Ending section above.
