Who's who
- Wei Rao (Tian Xiwei): known as A Chou for most of her life. Quick, practical, and willing to do whatever keeps her family alive. She enters the Duke's house as a bride with a price on her head if she slips.
- Lu Zhuo (Yan An): heir to the Duke of Ying and a general fresh from the border. He woke up married to a woman he had planned to drop, and he trusts nothing she says.
- Jun Dai (Tian Xiwei): the original Wei Rao, pampered by her grandmother and cruel when crossed. After the switch she hides at a country estate under a new name and watches her double's life with growing resentment.
- Qi Zhongkai (Liu Xiaobei): Lu Zhuo's closest friend, a soldier who keeps turning up when the heroine needs help.

A Chou is the real Wei Rao. She was switched out of the Count of Cheng'an's house as a baby and raised in poverty, while the girl who grew up as Wei Rao, later Jun Dai, was never the family's daughter. Episode 2 already hints that Guo Yufeng, the eldest son's wife, was behind the switch and has spent years believing the real baby was dead. Zhou Fu is Wei Rao's birth mother. Qi Zhongkai is the first to see that the new bride isn't the woman he knew, and Ah Man and Bi Tao both turn from spies into the heroine's allies.
