Who's who
- Xiao Wuyi (Hou Minghao): heir of the Prince of Jing'an and commander of the Beifu army. After the defeat at Jiuzhangyuan he lets the court believe he died, then comes back to find who sent his men bad weapons.
- Xie Jiayu (Ai Mi): the Grand Tutor's foster daughter, an orphan whose birth parents were killed by Northern Qin raiders. She designs mechanisms and sells them in secret.
- Li Mao (Riley Wang): Prince Qi. He and Jiayu planned to run away on her wedding night, but a coup traps him in the palace as regent.
- Li Lejun (Ma Qiuyuan): Lady Pingning, Li Mao's sister, held at court as the Empress Dowager's hostage.
- Xie Huaigui (Peter Ho): the Grand Tutor, Jiayu's foster father, a patient schemer.

- Xiao Wuyi didn't die at Jiuzhangyuan. He faked it and slipped back into the capital to investigate.
- Jiayu is Miaoshou Gongzi, the inventor whose crossbow design reached the army. Xiao Yao exposes this in episode 5.
- Xiao Wuyi is really Crown Prince Wenxi, raised as Xiao Sheng by the Jing'an family. Princess Yunzhao reveals it in episode 7.
- He Yuanji and Rui Sheng each love someone else, and the boy in Wuyi's household is not his son.
