The first stretch is a marriage of convenience between two people who suspect each other. Jiayu sells clever devices under the alias Miaoshou Gongzi (妙手公子, roughly "the deft-handed young master"), and Wuyi needs to know whether she is part of the plot that killed 30,000 of his soldiers. They agree to a truce on their wedding night and spend the next episodes catching each other out, while the Empress Dowager, a rebel prince and a Northern Qin delegation press in from outside. The middle third turns on an archery contest for three border provinces, which Wuyi has to win while he is going blind.
Chinese reviewers singled out the original script and a cast of smart characters: the women in Wuyi's household don't fight over him, and the villains have reasons of their own. Viewers called it a slow starter that kept getting better, and noted that it does a lot on a modest budget. The heat rose through the run on iQIYI, and MyDramaList viewers rate it well above its Douban score.
The Story
Key to the Phoenix Heart (雀骨) is a 28-episode iQIYI historical romance written for the screen. Xiao Wuyi (Hou Minghao), heir of the Prince of Jing'an and a general reported lost after a crushing defeat on the northern border, comes back to the capital and forces a marriage on Xie Jiayu (Ai Mi), the Grand Tutor's foster daughter. The court sees a brute claiming a bride. In fact he is hunting whoever sent his army faulty crossbows, and she is secretly the inventor whose design ended up in them. It premiered on July 11, 2026, finished in China on July 28, and streams outside China on iQIYI with English subtitles.
Release Notes
Key to the Phoenix Heart was produced by iQIYI with Honghuo Culture (鸿火文化), China Film Co. (中国电影) and New Media Co. (新媒股份). It was directed by Gao Yijun (高翊浚) and Sun Mengfei (孙梦飞), with Cheng Lu (程箓) co-directing, and written by Wu Mengzhang (吴孟璋) and Shi Ruomin (施若旻). It was filmed from July 15 to November 5, 2025.
It premiered on iQIYI on July 11, 2026, with iQIYI International releasing it worldwide the same day. Members got two episodes a day at 18:00 through July 19, then one a day, with a three-day pause from July 23 to 25. Chinese press reports put the finale on July 28. iQIYI's heat index peaked at 8,727, Yunhe measured a peak market share of 17.2% on July 23, and Maoyan counted more than 599 million effective views by July 29.
In July 2026 the drama drew complaints online because Ai Mi was 17 when she filmed romantic scenes opposite Hou Minghao, who is 11 years older. Many viewers answered that the drama has no scenes that cross a line. As of July 15 neither iQIYI nor the production had commented, according to Baidu Baike.
Zhang Bichen (张碧晨) and Hou Minghao sing the theme song, Zhi Guang (炙光), and Hou also sings the opening song, Yi Nuo Cheng Chuan (一诺成川). The soundtrack also has songs by Xin Liu (刘雨昕), Huang Xiaoyun (黄霄雲), Duan Aojuan (段奥娟), Jing Long (井胧) and Xi Xi (茜西).

It's a happy ending. Xiao Wuyi goes deep into Northern Qin as a spy who is meant to die, and lures its army into a trap at Dingfengpo. After the victory he is missing and presumed dead. He survived with no memory, and Jiayu finds him at a lantern festival. Her drum rhythm and an old hair ribbon bring him back, and they stay together.

The core reveals land in the middle of the run. In episode 7 Princess Yunzhao, Jiayu's foster mother, tells her that Xiao Wuyi is really Crown Prince Wenxi, a royal heir taken in by the Prince and Princess of Jing'an and raised under the name Xiao Sheng. The crossbows that lost the battle of Jiuzhangyuan were built from Jiayu's design. Once she learns the truth of how it reached the army, she breaks with her foster father, the Grand Tutor Xie Huaigui, burns her old drawings and vows to make weapons that save soldiers instead. Xie Huaigui had spent more than 20 years scheming to put Li Mao in power so that the An and Lu clans, ruined with Consort An, whom he loved, could be cleared.
In episodes 14 to 16 a poisoned mine at the Cui estate fouls the army's rations, Cui Jun is exposed as a Northern Qin spy, and the craftsman Yuan Xiaoliu sacrifices himself. Princess Yunzhao is killed in a carriage crash. Li Lejun caused it to protect a secret about her brother Li Mao's birth. When Jiayu finds out she spares Li Lejun, who goes north as an agent. The Empress Dowager is brought down in episode 20, with He Yuanji's help, and Jiayu becomes Wuyi's formal consort. At the spring palace exam Wuyi exposes Xie Huaigui's scheme, and Li Mao clears the An and Lu clans. Xie Huaigui asks to retire and is assassinated by a Northern Qin agent while packing.
The finale is a long con. In episode 24 Wuyi and Li Mao stage a public break, and the fall of the Xiao family that follows is part of the ruse. Wuyi crosses into Northern Qin as a "doomed spy" (死间, sijian). To win the Eagle King's trust, Li Lejun asks Wuyi to shoot her, and he does. Jiayu perfects the fire caltrop, an early gunpowder weapon. At Dingfengpo in episode 27 the Qin army walks into the trap and is destroyed, so Northern Qin can no longer threaten the south. The Prince of Jing'an dies protecting his elder son, Xiao Yao.
In episode 28 only Wuyi's black-and-gold sword is found, and he is presumed dead. Li Mao takes the throne. Jiayu travels, teaching her craft. At the Thousand Lantern Festival a masked guard commander saves her. He is Wuyi, who survived in a cave and was healed by a doctor but lost his memory. Her hair ribbon and the drum rhythm they shared at the archery contest bring it back, and the two stay together.

The doomed spy
Wuyi's last mission comes straight from The Art of War. Sun Tzu lists five kinds of spies, and the "doomed spy" (死间, sijian) is the one sent to the enemy with false information, never expected to return. Wuyi plays the part for real, defecting in disgrace so that Northern Qin will trust what he tells them.
Fire caltrops
Jiayu's final weapon, the fire caltrop (火蒺藜, huojili), is a real early gunpowder device. The Song dynasty military manual Wujing Zongyao (1044) describes it as a ball of gunpowder studded with iron spikes, thrown or launched at the enemy. Caltrops themselves are spiked iron pieces scattered to stop horses.
The title
雀骨 (que gu) means "sparrow bone," which is why some fans call it Bird Bone. In the drama a set of Queguling (雀骨令) tokens is tied to Wuyi's hidden identity, and in episode 24 he has them melted down into a hairpin. The English title, Key to the Phoenix Heart, is iQIYI's.
North and south
The southern kingdom, Nanye (南邺), faces Northern Qin across a contested border. The setting is fictional, but the north–south split echoes the centuries after 317 when China was divided between northern and southern courts. The Beifu (北府, "northern headquarters") army also has a real namesake: the Eastern Jin's elite force, raised at Jingkou, downriver from the southern capital, which beat a far larger northern army at the Fei River in 383.
