Who's who
- Zhang Qishan (William Chan): Fo Ye, the head of the Nine Gates and commander of Changsha's garrison. Proud and decisive, he carries the guilt of choices he made to keep the city safe, including one Wu Laogou can't forgive.
- Wu Laogou (Zeng Shunxi): the fifth gate, a former child miner and beggar who rose through dog kennels to take over his gate. He looks like a coward and a joker, and he is neither.
- Huo Xiangu (Chen Yao): the seventh gate, head of a clan run by women. She fights off scheming aunts and a predatory police chief to keep her family's fortune.
- Xie Jiu (Ji Xiaobing): the ninth gate and the clans' strategist, who works out how the Nine Gates can survive the end of the Nine Gates.
- Qi Tiezui (Ying Haoming): the eighth gate, a diviner and Zhang's closest friend, and the comic relief underground.
- Hatoyama Miji (Wang Maolei): a Japanese scientist whose "Operation Capture" has a hidden target.
Identity Reveals
Ending spoilerShow identity reveals
Ding Qiansui, the eunuch who claims American protection, is spying on the gates and is exposed in episode 12. In episode 11 Hatoyama reveals that his "Operation Capture" (捕全) is a pun on "catch the dog" (捕犬): Wu Laogou was the target all along. The Elder Between Worlds is a projection of Huo Xiangu's own mind. And Xie Jiu, who confesses to collaborating with Japan, did it to bring down Huo Wenhai and cover the gates' escape.
