What to Expect
We haven't watched this one. This section is based on the official episode synopses, Chinese reviews and English coverage, and we'll replace it with a verdict once we have one.
The first two thirds are an underground adventure. Zhang, Wu and the other gates go down into the Tower Between Worlds (隔世楼), a maze of opera stages, water channels full of skulls and rooms that seem to repeat forever. The puzzles lean on Chinese folk religion, opera and the masked nuo rituals of western Hunan, and the mystery has a clear answer: a Japanese experiment and a hallucinogenic sand that confuses memory. Chinese reviewers singled out the look of the show, a smoky, crowded Changsha above ground and an eerie red-and-black world below, and praised an ensemble in which almost every gate head gets a real arc.
The last third changes genre. Once the soldiers are found, the government decides the Nine Gates are a threat, and the story becomes a political thriller about how the clans survive their own purge. That part is darker and slower. An English-language reviewer at Chasing Dramas felt the final five or so episodes drag, and Chinese critics pointed to logic holes, such as Zhang judging a 400-meter drop from the sound of one pebble.
It's a bromance more than a romance. Zhang and Wu Laogou go from enemies to brothers, and the feelings between Wu and Huo Xiangu run underneath without being resolved. It was a big hit. Youku's heat index passed 10,000 within two days, the fastest of 2026 on Youku, and by Baidu Baike's count it topped Yunhe Data's daily chart for 21 days. It holds a 6.7 on Douban from more than 43,000 ratings.
The Story
Changsha, the 1930s. An entire army unit, the 401, vanishes overnight from a military hospital, and beneath the building someone finds a tunnel that goes down much further than it should. Zhang Qishan, the city's garrison commander and head of the nine tomb-raiding clans called the Nine Gates, needs the best tracker in the city to follow it. That is Wu Laogou, the fifth gate's dog trainer, who hates him: years earlier Zhang executed Wu's steward. Wu agrees to help on one condition, that Zhang leaves the Nine Gates once the 401 are found. Mystic Nine (九门) is a 30-episode Youku drama from 2026 and the sequel to The Mystic Nine (老九门, 2016), set in the world of Nanpai Sanshu's The Lost Tomb novels. William Chan returns as Zhang, with Zeng Shunxi as Wu Laogou and Chen Yao as Huo Xiangu.

In Brief
Ending spoilerShow the ending in brief
Mystic Nine has a bittersweet ending. The Nine Gates are officially destroyed, and Wu Laogou is publicly executed as the man who betrayed them, but in the last episode it turns out the massacre and the execution were staged. Almost everyone survives and scatters across China to fight the Japanese, though they can never come back as the Nine Gates. Xie Jiu really does die, having taken the blame as a collaborator to save the others.

This account comes from the official episode synopses for episodes 23 to 30, not from watching.
The tower's secret. The "infinite towers" underground are loops of memory caused by star-moon sand (星月砂), shed from the scales of a creature called Zhai Niangniang. Men exposed to the sand turn into the creature, and women into a plant called huanshi cao (换尸草). The Elder Between Worlds turns out to be Huo Xiangu's own projection, and Hua Zi killed the real elder long ago. Wu Laogou had already found the 401 and hidden them by having them take the plant to fake death, and he shot one soldier, Zhang Yuanhang, at the man's own request. Zhang's tattoo protects him from the poison, he kills Hatoyama Miji, the tower is destroyed and the 401 are saved.
The purge. Back in Changsha, police chief Huo Wenhai hires an assassin to break the gates one by one. Er Yuehong is poisoned, Banjie Li's family is threatened, and Heibei kills the assassin and is arrested. Officer Luo of the Military Affairs ministry tells Zhang the government wants the Nine Gates gone. Xie Jiu confesses to collaborating with the Japanese, names Huo Wenhai as the man behind it, and dies in prison. His letter tells Zhang to "kill six, save three." Zhang's adjutant Zhang Xiaoyu fakes a defection and dies taking Huo Wenhai with him.
Kill eight, save one. In episode 29 Wu Laogou visits each gate. Newspapers report that he stabbed Banjie Li, Chen Pi and Heibei and crippled Huo Xiangu, and Officer Luo gives Zhang three days to wipe him out. Wu admits the real plan in Xie Jiu's letter was "kill eight, save one": only Zhang survives, so he can protect the clans' people. Wu drugs Zhang, stages an assassination attempt, and lets Zhang publicly execute him and his household.
The reveal. Episode 30 is narrated by a storyteller twenty years later. It was all a trap that Zhang and Xie Jiu had set for Officer Luo. The gate heads meet outside the city, alive. Huo Xiangu leaves for Beiping to build a career of her own, Banjie Li and Heibei stay to fight the Japanese, Chen Pi sets off to travel and later fights the Japanese in Xiangxi, Wu Laogou heads for Xiangxi, and Er Yuehong goes to Guizhou to teach war orphans opera. They open the wine buried when the Nine Gates were founded and drink to Xie Jiu, who died carrying the collaborator charge.
The last scenes. In Beiping, Huo Xiangu kills a Japanese officer, Sasaki, in a hotel ballroom, then sees a newspaper photo of a famous dog trainer and recognizes Wu Laogou. Wu is training dogs for the front, with Tianpeng, one of his household, at his side. Zhang and Boss Yin fight at the front. Wu and Huo don't meet again onscreen. The synopses never make Qi Tiezui's fate clear: Wu is seen mourning him in episode 29, and he isn't named at the farewell.

Full explanationThe Lost Tomb universe
Mystic Nine belongs to the world of Daomu Biji (盗墓笔记), Nanpai Sanshu's best-selling tomb-raiding novels, known in English as The Lost Tomb. Most adaptations follow Wu Xie, a young antiques dealer, and his companions in the present day. The Mystic Nine (2016) went back to his grandfather's generation, and this drama continues it. Nanpai Sanshu was a chief supervising producer, and the production says the script was reworked over seven years, through seven versions. The story is original, written for the screen, and it ends by sending Wu Laogou toward the south, where the main novels find his family. Wu Xie and Zhang Qiling appear in cameos.
The Nine Gates
The Nine Gates (九门) are nine Changsha families who make their living from tombs, ranked in three tiers. Traditionally the upper three, led by Zhang Qishan, and the middle three rob tombs themselves, while the lower three, the Huo, Qi and Xie families, mostly deal in what comes out of them. Each head is known by a title or nickname, which is why the characters are called Banjie Li ("Half Li"), Heibei Laoliu ("Black-Back Six") and Wu Laogou ("Old Dog Wu").
Daodou, tomb raiding
Daodou (倒斗) is slang for robbing tombs, and daomu (盗墓) is the plain word. In the Republican era, war and weak government made tomb raiding a real trade around Changsha, and looted relics fed both collectors and foreign buyers. The genre treats the raiders as part crooks, part heroes, which is why the gate heads spend the drama keeping relics out of Japanese hands.
Xiangxi and nuo
Xiangxi, the mountainous west of Hunan, appears in the drama as the land of the 82 villages, and Chinese stories have long linked it to sorcery and corpse-herding legends. Nuo (傩) is an old masked ritual theater meant to drive out evil spirits, and the drama uses nuo masks and dances for its puzzles and its villains.
The Xinyue Hotel
The Xinyue Hotel (新月饭店) in Beiping is a famous auction house in the Lost Tomb world, owned by Yin Xinyue's family. In episodes 17 to 20 the gates pull off a heist at its auction, with Zhang disguised as a newspaper editor and the bidding against a Japanese buyer going past two million.
Mystic Nine FAQ
How many episodes does Mystic Nine have?
Mystic Nine has 30 episodes, each about 45 minutes long. All 30 have aired: the drama premiered on Youku on July 30, 2026, and Youku's member calendar ran to August 22. The story ends in episode 30, and no second season has been announced.
Where can I watch Mystic Nine?
In China, Mystic Nine streams on Youku. In the US, it's on Viki: we checked on October 25, 2026, and all 30 episodes were free to watch with ads and English subtitles. Viki often carries the same titles in the UK, Canada and Australia, but we haven't checked those countries ourselves.
Is Mystic Nine a sequel to The Mystic Nine (2016)?
Yes. It continues the 2016 drama with the same Nine Gates and William Chan back as Zhang Qishan, but most of the cast is new, and Wu Laogou and Huo Xiangu take bigger roles. It tells a new, self-contained story, so you can follow it without the first drama, though you'll catch more references if you've seen it.
Does Mystic Nine have a happy ending?
SpoilerShow the answer
Minor spoilerReveal whether it ends happily
Mostly, but it's bittersweet. The Nine Gates are dissolved and their heads have to leave Changsha, but almost all of them survive and go on to fight the Japanese. One important character dies for the others, and Wu Laogou and Huo Xiangu don't end up together onscreen.
Does Wu Laogou die in Mystic Nine?
SpoilerShow the answer
Ending spoilerReveal what happens to Wu Laogou
No. In episode 29 Zhang Qishan publicly executes Wu Laogou, but episode 30 reveals the execution was staged to fool the government. Wu leaves Changsha, and the final scenes show him training dogs for the front, and Huo Xiangu recognizes him from a newspaper photo.
Who dies in Mystic Nine?
SpoilerShow the answer
Ending spoilerReveal who dies
Xie Jiu dies in prison after confessing to collaboration to bring down Huo Wenhai. Zhang's adjutant Zhang Xiaoyu dies killing Huo Wenhai. Hatoyama Miji and Ding Qiansui die earlier. The other gate heads' deaths in episode 29 are staged. The synopses leave Qi Tiezui's fate unclear.
How does Mystic Nine connect to The Lost Tomb?
Mystic Nine is set in the grandparents' generation of The Lost Tomb. Wu Laogou is the grandfather of Wu Xie, the hero of the Lost Tomb dramas, and Huo Xiangu and Qiu Dekao (裘德考) are names Lost Tomb readers will know. The ending sends Wu south, setting up his family's later life, and Wu Xie appears in a cameo.
What order should I watch The Mystic Nine and Lost Tomb dramas in?
By story time, start with The Mystic Nine (2016), then this sequel, then the Lost Tomb dramas set in the present day, such as The Lost Tomb (2015) and Ultimate Note (2020). By release order works too. Each drama is self-contained, so starting with Mystic Nine is fine.
Who sings the Mystic Nine theme song?
Zhou Shen sings the ending theme, "Ting Wu Sheng Chu" (听无声处). William Chan sings the insert song "Feng Pei" (奉陪), Zeng Shunxi sings "Tong Gui" (同归), and Curley Gao and Ayanga sing other insert songs. The score album came out on August 10, 2026.
