The golden core is one of the best-known milestones in cultivation stories. A practitioner who has built up enough spiritual energy condenses it into a core, usually described as sitting in the lower abdomen. From then on, the core is the reservoir of their power. Subtitles may call it a golden core, an inner core, or a spiritual core.

The term comes from Taoist inner alchemy, where the "golden elixir" was a metaphor for the refined essence a practitioner hoped to create within themselves on the path to immortality. Xianxia fiction turned that metaphor into something physical.

In many stories, forming a golden core is the line between a beginner and a real cultivator. Fiction often lists it after Qi Refining and Foundation Establishment and before Nascent Soul, though each story invents its own ladder, so don't expect the same stages in every drama.

Because the core holds a character's power, it's a common plot device. Cores can be damaged in battle, sealed, stolen, or given to someone else, and losing one usually means losing the ability to cultivate. When a drama makes a point of a character's core, pay attention.

The idea runs through xianxia stories with sect settings, though not every drama names it. Some dramas use related terms such as neidan (inner elixir) for the same concept.
