Xianxia is the genre behind most of the flowing-robes, glowing-sword fantasy dramas that reach Netflix and Viki. The name combines xian, an immortal, with xia, a hero, and it grows out of older Chinese myth, Taoist ideas about cultivation, and the martial-arts tradition of wuxia.
The core setup: the world is layered into realms, typically a heavenly realm of immortals, a demon or ghost realm, and the mortal world. Characters gain power and lifespan by cultivating spiritual energy, and the most powerful can live for thousands of years. That scale shapes the romance. Lovers can be separated by centuries, reborn into new lives, or kept apart by rules between realms.
Common ingredients include sects and their disciples, master-and-student bonds, tribulations that test a character before they rise in rank, and stories that span several lifetimes. Visual effects carry a lot of the genre, so budgets vary widely and so does the look.
For first-time viewers, Love Between Fairy and Devil and Till the End of the Moon are popular entry points. Eternal Love and Ashes of Love are older favorites that many fans still recommend.
Xianxia is often confused with xuanhuan, a broader fantasy label that can include invented worlds with no immortals at all. On this site we tag a drama as xianxia when immortals, realms, and cultivation are central to the story.
