What to Expect
We haven't watched this one, and it hasn't aired. This section is based on the official synopsis, the trailers and the source novel, and we'll replace it with a verdict once the drama finishes.
The hook is the two souls. Wang Churan plays two characters in one body: Mei Jiu, sheltered and kind, and An Jiu, a killer with no patience for manners. Each soul gets her own love story. The trailers lean on action, with bows, swords and night raids, and a darker look than most costume romances.
Expect spy plots and family secrets more than palace scheming. The Mei family is not what it seems, and the Crane Guards trains its agents hard. Fellow recruits include the proud heiress Mei Tingyuan, the medical genius Mo Sigui and Lou Mingyue, who is out for revenge.
The Story
A girl named Mei Jiu shares her body with a second soul, An Jiu, a cold and highly trained assassin. To find her missing mother, she joins the Crane Guards, a secret corps of agents. As An Jiu, she fights beside Chu Dingjiang, a young general hiding a secret of his own. As Mei Jiu, she is courted by Hua Rongjian, a gentle young noble. Hidden Shadow (烽影燃梅香) stars Wang Churan in the double role, with Li Hongyi as Chu Dingjiang and Yan An as Hua Rongjian. It is a 36-episode Youku drama based on Xiu Tang's novel Wei Song Sha Shou Ri Zhi (伪宋杀手日志), which YOUKU's English site calls The Song Dynasty's Lady Assassin. Filming started in January 2024. As of late October 2026, it still has no release date.
Release Notes
Youku produces the drama, and it will stream on Youku in China. Filming began at Hengdian World Studios on January 24, 2024, and Youku has since released a wrap special. In spring 2026, an advertising sheet reported by Sina said it would air on Youku and iQIYI in mid-May 2026. That didn't happen, and an October 2026 Youku-exclusive slot reported in August didn't happen either. On October 29, 2026, Youku's Chinese site still showed only trailers, with more than 1.5 million viewers signed up for a reminder, and YOUKU's international site listed it under Coming Soon. We'll add it to our calendar once Youku announces a date.
Does Hidden Shadow have a happy ending?

Hidden Shadow has not aired yet. We fill this page in after the finale.
In Brief
Ending spoilerShow the ending in brief
The drama hasn't aired, so nobody knows its ending yet. The novel suggests the answer will be bittersweet rather than purely happy or sad. Readers say the main couple, An Jiu and Chu Dingjiang, end on a good note, but the last volume kills off many familiar side characters, and one Douban reader called the ending bleak. Fan videos for the drama already talk about a sad ending, but that is speculation. We'll update this section after the finale.

The novel behind it
The drama adapts Wei Song Sha Shou Ri Zhi (伪宋杀手日志, roughly "Diary of an Assassin in a Fake Song Dynasty") by Xiu Tang (袖唐). It was published in print in 2014 as Da Song Nü Cike (大宋女刺客), "Lady Assassin of the Great Song", with a concluding volume in 2015. Xiu Tang also wrote the novel behind Female Forensic Doctor of the Great Tang. As far as we know, the book has no official English translation.
In the novel, An Jiu is a modern assassin who dies on a job and wakes up in the body of Mei Jiu, a timid girl in a fictional Song dynasty. The two souls share the body for a long time before the story separates them. Chu Dingjiang is far older than he looks: readers describe him as a man from a much earlier era, living a second life. YOUKU's synopsis doesn't mention either twist, so the drama may change them.
Differences from the Novel
Ending spoilerShow the differences
We can't compare yet. The official synopsis keeps the novel's core: the two souls, the missing mother, the Crane Guards, and the two love stories. It doesn't say whether An Jiu is from the modern world, as she is in the book. We'll note changes once episodes air.

Ending spoilerReveal what readers say about the novel's ending
We haven't read the final volume ourselves, so this is based on reader reviews. Readers on Douban describe An Jiu and Chu Dingjiang as the book's endgame couple, and say the story ends with An Jiu finding a life and a purpose of her own with his help. The cost is high: one reader complained that the final volume kills off familiar supporting characters one after another, and called the ending bleak. One review also says Mei Jiu, the original soul, dies and is reborn into another member of the same family. Some Chinese question-and-answer sites claim Chu Dingjiang dies at the end; we couldn't confirm that from a reliable source, so treat it as a rumor.

Words and customs you'll hear
A "fake" Song dynasty
The novel's title calls its world 伪宋, a "fake Song". The setting borrows the look, offices and customs of the Song dynasty (960–1279) without following real history, which leaves the author free to invent families, wars and secret services.
The Crane Guards
The Crane Guards (控鹤军) is the secret corps that trains the heroine. The name comes from real imperial guard units in Chinese history, and the novel models its spy service on the Song dynasty's Imperial City Office (皇城司), which guarded the palace and gathered intelligence for the emperor.
