The story, without spoilers

What to Expect

We haven't watched this one. This section is based on the episode summaries, the published cast list, and reviews in the Chinese press.

The first ten episodes play like a wuxia mystery. Qingque Sect takes in the boy Cai Zhao rescued, a second "Chang Ning" turns up, a temple head is exposed, impostors in borrowed faces walk into the sect, and an old journal explains how Cai Zhao's aunt, the hero Cai Pingshu, lost her life. Around episode 9 the story pivots: the boy's real identity comes out, and the middle third follows him as he takes back his own sect while Cai Zhao travels with Song Yuzhi. The last third brings everyone back together to hunt the person behind the Chang Fort massacre.

Chinese viewers praised the photography, the framing and the music, and many described it as watching a long wuxia music video. The main complaints were a plot that stalls in the middle, characters whose motives are hard to follow, and style winning out over story, which is why its Douban score is low. International viewers on MDL rated it much higher.

The novel behind it

The drama adapts Jiang Hu Ye Yu Shi Nian Deng (江湖夜雨十年灯), a wuxia romance by Guan Xin Ze Luan (关心则乱), whose earlier novel became The Story of Ming Lan. MDL translates the title as Ten Years Lantern on a Stormy Martial Arts World Night. As far as we've found, there is no official English translation, so searching by the pinyin or the Chinese characters works best.

The title

The Chinese title is the second half of a couplet by the Song dynasty poet Huang Tingjian (黄庭坚), from a poem to an old friend: 桃李春风一杯酒,江湖夜雨十年灯, roughly "a cup of wine among spring peach blossoms; ten years of lamplight in rainy nights on rivers and lakes." It is about friends parted for a decade. The English title, Generation to Generation, points to the drama's other theme: Cai Zhao and Mu Qingyan inheriting the loves and feuds of their parents' generation.

Jianghu and the "demonic" sect

The jianghu (江湖, literally "rivers and lakes") is the world of martial artists outside the law. Wuxia stories often split it into righteous sects and a feared "demonic" sect, and here that is the Li Sect (离教). Much of the drama asks whether the line between the two means anything.

Forbidden techniques

The plot turns on two martial arts manuals. The Heavenly Demon Disintegration (天魔解体大法) gives a burst of power at the cost of the user's life, and the Ziwei Heart Sutra (紫微心经) is a cultivation manual hidden in the journal of a former Qingque leader, Yin Dai.
