What to Expect

We haven't watched this one. This section is based on the published episode synopses, the production's own descriptions, and Chinese coverage of the source novel.

The early episodes run on a small mystery. Ye Pingjun has ten days to find the person behind the attack, and the synopses keep Yu Changxuan two steps ahead of everyone: in public he is the idle rich son, in private he is planning moves for his father's army. Their arrangement, in which she poses as his companion, is useful to him before it means anything.

Around them is a crowded warlord household: a stern father, a mother and a concubine with their own interests, a dead elder brother whose widow still lives in the house, and an aide who knows more than he says. The official synopsis says the story later widens into war and the national salvation movement.

Chinese coverage describes the novel as a tragedy, and Sina reports that the book's fans are split on the drama softening it. The drama rewrites the second half around the war against Japan, so the book's ending doesn't apply. Don't expect a light finish either: the last episodes are heavy on loss.

The Story

It is 1919, and the city of Nanhuai is held by the Yu family's army. Ye Pingjun, a student with a sick mother and no money, takes a job at a hotel to pay for her treatment. On her first day there, someone tries to kill Yu Changxuan, the commander's playboy fifth son, and she ends up a suspect. He gives her ten days to find who did it. The Lament of Autumn (玉簟秋) follows what grows out of that bet: a pretend romance that suits his plans, a childhood friend back from abroad, and a city sliding toward war. Cheng Lei and Xu Ruohan lead the 40-episode Mango TV and Hunan TV drama, adapted from Ling Xi's 2010 novel. Outside China it streams on Viki and Mango TV's international site.

Release Notes

The drama runs 40 episodes of about 45 minutes. It was filmed from October 2025 to March 2026 in Hengdian, Hangzhou, Ningbo, and Shanghai. Mango TV premiered it on October 12, 2026, with four episodes, and released new ones at noon Beijing time, with early access each day for SVIP members. The last episodes came out on November 1. Hunan TV aired two episodes nightly from about 20:10. Outside China, Viki lists it as an exclusive. When we checked from the US on October 25, Viki had 23 episodes, with episodes 1 to 10 free and the rest on Viki Pass. Mango TV's international site had 24 full episodes, none marked VIP.

Sad Ending

We have not finished this one ourselves; this is based on outside sources. The drama changes how the novel ends. Fans disagree about how to read it.

In Brief

Ending spoilerShow the ending in brief

No, it's a sad ending. In the last episode, Yu Changxuan is badly wounded holding the line against the Japanese army, and Mango TV's own title for the episode says he dies for his country. The screen stops at him collapsing, though, so some Chinese viewers still read it as open. A year later, Ye Pingjun is raising their son, who believes his father will come home when the maples turn red. The novel is grim in the opposite way: there, Ye Pingjun dies alone, and Yu Changxuan lives on and remarries.

This account follows Mango TV's own episode titles and synopses for the last seven episodes, plus Baidu Baike through episode 34. We haven't watched them, and the synopses are short, so we only include what they agree on.

The story picks up after Ye Pingjun walks out, pregnant, believing Yu Changxuan had a hand in her mother's death. She loses the baby (episode 34) and opens a flower shop in a small town, where she starts helping her friends Song Hanzhi and Liang Wenbo with their underground patriotic work. Yu Changxuan finds her and, this time, agrees to let her choose. In episode 35, Kuang Bingwen, the family's son-in-law, admits that he set the fire that killed her mother. That clears Yu Changxuan, and the two make up. She goes to the front as a nurse, and she is pregnant again when he leaves for battle.

Then the ship she is on is reported sunk, and he believes she is dead. In fact, Jiang Xueting has her, and he keeps her shut up in his house in another city (episode 36). She has a boy, and Jiang Xueting uses the child to keep her in line. He shows her the newspaper notice of Yu Changxuan's engagement, a political match he agreed to on paper, and has the baby taken away. She is told the child died (episode 37). The boy is alive, and in episode 38 he is brought to Yu Changxuan, who meets his son for the first time. Tao Ziyi's father is killed, and Chinese recaps say she leaves for France.

In episode 39, Jiang Xueting, dying after blowing up a Japanese-run factory, tells Ye Pingjun that her son is alive and gives her a pass out of the city. She makes her way back to Nanhuai. When Japanese planes bomb the city after the Mukden Incident of 1931, she and Yu Changxuan find each other in the streets, and she is reunited with their son. In 1933, as the Japanese army pushes toward the Great Wall, Yu Changxuan overrides his father and takes his troops north to hold the pass at Wubeikou.

The last episode belongs to the war. Before he goes, he promises Ye Pingjun he'll come back so they can plant maples together. His mother, Zhao Baoru, gives herself up to Japanese soldiers to spare the townspeople, shoots an officer, and is killed. At the front, out of ammunition and without reinforcements, Li Boren blows up a tank and dies with it. Yu Changxuan is gravely wounded, remembers their wedding vows, and collapses in the rain. Mango TV titles the episode with his death for his country, though the screen never shows him die. A year later, Ye Pingjun is doing propaganda work in a revolutionary base area. By a stream, she plants a young tree with their son, who believes his father will come back when the maple leaves turn red. The drama ends on the two of them standing by the river.

The novel behind it

The drama adapts Yu Dian Qiu (玉簟秋) by Ling Xi (灵希), first serialized on JJWXC in July 2010 and published in print the next month. It's about 200,000 Chinese characters, told in ten chapters with paired, classical-style chapter titles. As far as we know, there is no official English translation.

Ling Xi wrote it as the last book of what readers call her Republican trilogy, and it's a companion to her earlier Liang Chen Hao Jing Zhi Ji He (良辰好景知几何). Chinese reviewers describe it as a "BE" novel, fan shorthand for "bad ending," set in an invented warlord China rather than real history.

Differences from the Novel

Ending spoilerShow the differences

The setup follows the book: a poor girl, a warlord's son, and the childhood friend between them. The biggest change is the ending, which the drama turns around. In the novel, Ye Pingjun dies alone and Yu Changxuan survives. In the drama, Yu Changxuan dies at the front against Japan, and Ye Pingjun and their son live. The drama also gives Ye Pingjun a spell of lost memory, reunites the leads during the war, and lets Jiang Xueting redeem himself before he dies. Sina reports that it leaves out the darkest parts of the book and tones down Jiang Xueting's violence.

Novel Ending

Full spoilersShow how the novel ends

The novel ends tragically. This follows Chinese coverage from hk01 and Sina, which we haven't checked against the book. Jiang Xueting, her childhood friend, holds Ye Pingjun captive and mistreats her. She escapes and secretly gives birth to Yu Changxuan's son, whom she leaves with a friend's family. Yu Changxuan once passes her without recognizing her. She dies of illness, alone, and he marries and has a daughter. In an extra chapter, he unknowingly has his own son killed, which leaves him without an heir. The drama reverses who survives: Yu Changxuan dies in the war, and Ye Pingjun raises their son.

Words and customs you'll hear

Where the title comes from

玉簟秋 comes from the first line of a poem by Li Qingzhao (李清照), China's most famous woman poet of the Song dynasty: 红藕香残玉簟秋, roughly "the red lotus fades, and autumn reaches the jade mat." A yudian (玉簟) is a fine bamboo sleeping mat, cool in summer. When autumn arrives, it's too cold to lie on. The poem is about missing someone who is far away, which is the tone the title is reaching for.

Warlords and young marshals

After the Qing dynasty fell in 1912, China's central government lost control of much of the country, and regional military governors ran their territories like private kingdoms. This is the warlord era. A warlord's son and heir was called a shaoshuai (少帅), "young marshal." The drama's city, Nanhuai, is invented, but a Yu family that commands its own army and makes alliances with other warlords fits the period.

Concubines in a powerful household

Powerful men of this era often still kept concubines, ranked by order. San yitai (三姨太), "third concubine," is the title of Wang Likun's character. Concubines lived in the family home alongside the wife, and their children, status, and influence over the master were constant sources of tension.

No. Yu Changxuan is gravely wounded at the front in the last episode, and Mango TV's episode title says he dies for his country, though the screen doesn't show it. Ye Pingjun survives and raises their son, who is waiting for his father to come home. It's sad, but less bleak than the novel, where she is the one who dies alone.
