What to Expect
We haven't watched this one. This section is based on the official synopsis, Chinese and Taiwanese coverage, platform listings and finale recaps, and we'll replace it with a verdict once we have one.
It is a romance wrapped in a war and court-politics plot. Chu Qiao spends the early episodes caught between two men: Yan Xun, who turns from ally to ruthless ruler, and the protector who keeps appearing in her path. Chinese coverage describes an amnesia storyline for her, and sources differ on whether the memory loss is real or feigned. Expect a darker tone than a typical palace romance. A content note: the drama includes war violence.
You don't need to have seen the original. TVBS and World Journal both say the opening episodes recap Princess Agents for new viewers. The shoot used real locations, with HK01 reporting ice-lake scenes filmed on a Qinghai plateau at about minus 20°C without green screen.
Be prepared for a divisive show. Chinese media reported Douban scores of about 3.2 on April 17, and later reports put it nearer 3.0 or 2.9. Chinese critics pointed to the all-new cast, an age gap between the leads and a heroine reduced to an amnesiac who needs rescuing. Viki, by contrast, showed 8.6 from about 4,900 ratings when we checked, so international viewers have been kinder.
The Story
Rebirth (冰湖重生) is the direct sequel to the 2017 hit Princess Agents (楚乔传), and it opens on the cliffhanger that show left behind, the Battle of the Ice Lake. Chu Qiao and the nobleman Zhuge Yue fall into the frozen water together. Chu Qiao survives believing Zhuge Yue is gone, while Yan Xun, the northern heir she once fought beside, grows ever more ruthless in his pursuit of power and a worn stranger keeps stepping in to protect her. The 40-episode series was directed by Lü Haojiji (吕皓吉吉) and stars Li Yunrui, Huangyang Tiantian and Zhang Kangle, who replace the original leads. It aired on iQIYI and Tencent Video from April 8 to April 23, 2026, and streams internationally on Viki and iQ.com. Chinese reception was harsh.
Release Notes
Production was announced on December 6, 2024, with Lü Haojiji (吕皓吉吉) directing and Wei Yi (魏祎) as screenwriter. Zhang Meng (张萌) produced. Baidu Baike lists Shanghai Yaoke Culture as the producing company, with filming at Hengdian and in Delingha, Qinghai. Some English coverage lists Moonlit Reunion (子夜归) among Lü's earlier work; we haven't verified that.
Rebirth premiered on April 8, 2026, on iQIYI and Tencent Video at the same time. Members got five episodes on day one, then two episodes a day at 18:00. Sina and NetEase say Jiangsu TV carried it in prime time, while Baidu Baike dates its TV run to April 13. A NetEase article dated April 23 describes the finale as an early-access release on Tencent Video and iQIYI, and Zhejiang TV began a second run that night.
Outside China, Viki and iQ.com list English-subtitled pages. MyDramaList's listing also mentions WeTV. In Taiwan, TVBS reported that the show premiered on Netflix on April 8, and we saw a Netflix Taiwan title page with the cast. We could not confirm a Netflix release in the US, UK, Canada or Australia.

Most recaps agree that the war is won, that Chu Qiao and Zhuge Yue are together and raise two children, that several supporting characters die along the way, and that a time-skip finale shows an elderly Yan Xun and an elderly Zhuge Yue facing each other on the ice lake from episode 1. They split on whether Chu Qiao dies before the time jump.

This account comes from episode titles, tvmao's synopsis and several Chinese fan and media recaps (NetEase, Tencent News, Sina), plus a few English articles, not from watching. Where they contradict each other, we say so.
The final battle. Tvmao's episode titles run from "Chu Qiao and Zhuge Yue break apart" in episode 35 to "Cheng Yuan dies taking an arrow for Yan Xun" in 36, "Zhao Che becomes emperor" in 38 and "Quanrong uses a marriage alliance to attack" in 39. Episode 40 is titled as a bloody battle that brings peace. The invaders in these recaps are the Quanrong (全戎).
Zhuge Yue's return. Recaps say Zhuge Yue faked his death. One places it in episode 39, while another puts it earlier and ties it to disbanding the Qingshan Academy (青山院). The reasons and timing differ by source.
Chu Qiao's fate. This is the most disputed point. One summary says she recovers and lives on with the two children. A Sina recap says she dies in Zhuge Yue's arms and the story then jumps ahead, and some NetEase recaps have her dying before him in the later years. We can't tell which version the broadcast shows.
The time skip. Recaps agree on a jump of decades. One counts 36 years, while another cites 46 years of peace. In it, Chu Qiao and Zhuge Yue have a son and a daughter. Yan Xun is old and confused, and one recap says he mourns Helian Ling. The last scene has old Yan Xun riding to the ice lake to meet old Zhuge Yue, which echoes the first episode.
Other characters. Cheng Yuan dies covering Yan Xun's escape. Zhao Che reportedly dies in battle after killing Huanhuan. Zhao Chun'er reportedly jumps from a tower. One article also describes wish-fulfilling pairings for fallen characters, and no other source repeats them, so treat that as one reading.
Why fans were upset. Chinese and English coverage says the finale departs from the novel and that many viewers found it confusing, but we couldn't pin down which changes drew the most complaints. Baidu Baike's summary of the book has Chu Qiao with Zhuge Yue and Yan Xun buried alone.

HK01's character guide describes Zhuge Yue as returning from the lake as a worn strategist who protects Chu Qiao in secret, so the mysterious helper is probably him. Recaps also describe a faked death for Zhuge Yue late in the story, but they disagree on when it happens.
The novel behind it
The drama continues the story of Shiyi Chu Tegong Huangfei (11处特工皇妃) by Xiaoxiang Dong'er (潇湘冬儿), the web novel behind Princess Agents. Chinese sources say it began serializing in 2009 on the Xiaoxiang Academy site, and that Jiangsu Literature and Art Publishing issued a print edition in 2011. Baidu Baike's English entry credits the novel as the source for Rebirth. As far as we know, there is no official English translation.
The 2017 show adapted only about half of the book, according to DramaPanda. Baidu Baike's summary of the novel's ending has Chu Qiao with Zhuge Yue and Yan Xun buried alone, and both Chinese and English commentary say the drama's finale departs from that.

One hero, two names
The male lead was called Yuwen Yue in the 2017 series, played by Lin Gengxin. Rebirth returns to the novel's name, Zhuge Yue, according to TVBS. Zhuge is one of the rare two-character surnames in Chinese, and it is best known from the Three Kingdoms strategist Zhuge Liang.
Marriage alliances
Episode 39's title mentions heqin (和亲), a marriage alliance in which a royal woman is sent to a rival power to secure peace. Dynastic China used the practice for centuries, and period dramas often use it to put a princess at the center of a political crisis. Here it drives the final invasion plot.
A nine-year gap
Princess Agents aired in 2017 with 58 or 67 episodes, depending on the cut. It ended on the frozen-lake cliffhanger, which fans spent years asking to see resolved. That history is why Rebirth was marketed as the sequel nine years in the making.

We couldn't confirm it. A Netflix Taiwan title page exists, and TVBS reported a Netflix premiere in Taiwan on April 8, 2026. We found no evidence of a release in the US, UK, Canada or Australia, and platform listings there point to Viki and iQ.com instead. In the US, Viki has every episode free with ads.
Who is in the cast of Rebirth?
Li Yunrui plays Zhuge Yue, Huangyang Tiantian plays Chu Qiao and Zhang Kangle plays Yan Xun. Xia Meng plays the princess Zhao Chun'er, with Li Xiaoqian, Li Meng, Sheng Yilun and Wu Jiakai in supporting roles. All of the core roles were recast from the 2017 series, which starred Zhao Liying and Lin Gengxin.
