What to Expect
We haven't watched this one. This section is based on the published episode synopses, the production's own descriptions, and the source novel, and we'll replace it with a verdict once the drama finishes.
The first episodes stay in the countryside. The early story is a slow, fond collision: Yan Shang is careful and polite to a fault, Mu Wanyao is imperious and bored, and the synopses play their first meetings lightly before Chang'an comes into view. Yan Shang's family, his struggling father, his gentle elder brother, and his sister, is part of the appeal.
Once the story moves to the capital, expect it to widen into a court drama. The official synopsis has Yan Shang falling in with a group of ambitious young men in Chang'an and, with the princess, rooting out corrupt officials while the country faces trouble at home and on its borders. The cast list is crowded with princes, ministers, and rival princesses.
One thing to know going in: the novel's heroine is difficult. The book's own page warns that she has been married before, has a fierce temper, and treats the hero badly at times. How much of that the drama keeps is still unclear, but don't expect a sweet heroine.
The Story
Mu Wanyao, Princess Danyang, is used to getting her way. Sent south to Lingnan to pray for her late mother, the empress, she is heading back to Chang'an when her carriage breaks down on a mountain road. The young man who helps her is Yan Shang, a poor scholar who does odd jobs at his village school and studies by firefly light. His family was respectable once, and now he has a talent no one in the capital has noticed. She notices. Tigers Sniff the Rose (尚公主) follows what happens when a princess with a temper and a long memory decides to bring a nobody into her world, and he proves very good at it. Meng Ziyi and Li Yunrui lead the 40-episode Tencent Video drama, their third project together. It's based on a JJWXC novel by Yi Ren Kui Kui and streams outside China on WeTV and Viki.
Release Notes
The drama runs 40 episodes of about 45 minutes. Tencent Video premiered it on October 23, 2026, at 18:00 Beijing time, with three episodes for VIP members, then two a day from October 24, and it was still releasing two a day on October 29. SVIP members see one episode ahead. Tencent hasn't announced a finale date. Baidu Baike says it launched the same day on WeTV, Viki, Disney+, YouTube and StarTimes. When we checked from the US on October 25, WeTV and Viki both had seven episodes, with the first three free and later ones for paying members. Meng Ziyi and Li Yunrui previously worked together on Love on the Turquoise Land (西出玉门) and Blossom (九重紫).

The drama's ending hasn't aired, and we won't guess at the details beyond the official synopsis. Much of what circulates online as "the ending" is drawn from the novel, sometimes inaccurately. The novel behind it
The drama adapts Shang Gong Zhu (尚公主) by Yi Ren Kui Kui (伊人睽睽), a historical romance serialized on JJWXC from February 2020 and since completed. As far as we know, there is no official English translation. The book is set in an invented dynasty that the author describes as a mix of the Tang and Han, which is why the drama's Chang'an looks Tang-inspired without being a real reign.
The book's blurb frames the whole story as a memory: years later, while the official history is being written, the princess and her husband each give their own very different account of how they met. In the novel, Yan Shang's birth name is Yan Shisheng (言石生).
Differences from the Novel
Ending spoilerShow the differences
The setup is close, with one visible change. In the novel, Mu Wanyao goes to Lingnan to recover after her first husband's death, and she meets Yan Shang while staying at a local gentleman's house, woken by the sound of him reading aloud. The drama sends her south to pray for her late mother and has them meet on the road, after her carriage breaks down. The novel's harsher treatment of the hero may be toned down on screen; we'll note how far once more episodes air.
Novel Ending
Full spoilersShow how the novel ends
The novel ends happily. According to its blurb, Yan Shang rises from nothing to become chancellor and marries Princess Danyang, so the book's title is literally where the story lands. We have seen conflicting secondhand accounts of the final chapters, including the couple's last years and the fates of the supporting men, and we haven't confirmed them, so we're leaving them out until we can check the book itself.

What "尚公主" means
In imperial China, a man didn't "marry" a princess the way he married anyone else. The verb was shang (尚), which means roughly "to look up to" or "to serve above," because the princess outranked her husband. Shang gong zhu means "to be married to a princess," and the husband became a fuma (驸马), an imperial son-in-law. In several later dynasties, that title came with limits on a man's official career, which makes the match a real choice for an ambitious scholar.
Where the English title comes from
Tigers Sniff the Rose nods to a line by the English poet Siegfried Sassoon, "In me the tiger sniffs the rose." In Chinese it's widely known as 心有猛虎,细嗅蔷薇, roughly "a tiger in the heart, gently smelling the rose," a phrase used for strength tempered by tenderness. Baidu Baike lists the drama's ending song as 蔷薇青竹, "Rose and Green Bamboo," sung by Zhang Yuan and Huang Xiaoyun.
Lingnan
Lingnan (岭南), "south of the mountain ranges," covered roughly today's Guangdong and Guangxi. To people in Chang'an it was hot, remote, and a common place of exile. A princess sent there is being kept at a distance, and a scholar from there has almost no road into the capital.
Humble families and the exams
Yan Shang comes from what Chinese calls a hanmen (寒门), literally a "cold gate": a family with education but no wealth or connections. In a Tang-style world, the imperial exams were open to men like him in theory, but patronage still decided who rose. That gap is the engine of the story.
