What to Expect

We haven't watched this one. This section is based on the episode summaries, the published cast list, and reviews in the Chinese and English press.

The drama is built from a run of self-contained cases strung along one long quest. It opens with a heart-theft mystery at Wei Manor in the city of Luo'an, moves into a dream-like illusion where the leads live out other people's lives across three time periods, and later traps everyone in a time loop at an inn. Behind each case sits a bigger question: what the Dragon Deity really is, and who is pulling the strings among the foxes.

The visuals are the main draw. The production built 34 fox costumes for Ju Jingyi alone, each with more than 3,000 hand-set scales, and reviewers on both sides agree the effects are among the best in a recent Chinese fantasy. The complaints are about everything else: a plot that keeps reversing who the real villain is, time jumps, and repeated deaths and resurrections. Chinese critics called it style over substance and Douban scored it 5.2, while MyDramaList and Viki viewers rated it above 8. There are two couples. Many viewers prefer Wu Shiguang and Wu Wangyan, who get less screen time than Lu Wuyi and Ji Ling.

The Story

Veil of Shadows (月鳞绮纪) is a 29-episode Youku fantasy drama that loosely reworks Painted Skin, the classic ghost story by Pu Songling. Lu Wuyi (Ju Jingyi), the youngest nine-tailed fox of a secret fox organization, goes undercover as a priest to hunt a heart-stealing demon, and keeps running into rivals on the same trail: a vengeful demon, Wu Shiguang (Zeng Shunxi), her own sister, Wu Wangyan (Chen Duling), and a gentle priest, Ji Ling (Tian Jiarui). All of them want something from the Dragon Deity. It premiered on April 1, 2026, set Youku's fastest heat record of the year, and streams outside China free on Viki and on Netflix.

Release Notes

Veil of Shadows was produced by Youku with Tianhao Shengshi (天浩盛世), Zuishi Culture (最世文化) and Jishiyu (吉时羽). The director and head writer is credited as Lu Jue (陆觉). MyDramaList credits Guo Jingming (Edward Guo), and the Chinese press widely treats it as his drama. It was filmed in Hengdian and at Puyuan in Zhejiang from December 2, 2024, to April 11, 2025. A fire broke out on one of the sets on March 20, 2025, and no one was hurt.

It premiered on Youku on April 1, 2026, with four episodes at noon, then two a day through April 5 and one a day after that, with SVIP members one episode ahead. Baike's broadcast calendar puts the last episode on April 24. Youku's heat index passed 10,000 within 52 hours, the fastest of 2026 at the time, and peaked at 10,081. Maoyan counted 975 million effective views by April 28. On the day it premiered, Ju Jingyi's former agency, SNH48's Siba Media (丝芭传媒), said her role breached her contract and that it had sued the production company.

Zhou Shen (周深) sings the theme and closing song, Yue zhi Ji (月之纪). The long soundtrack also includes Ren Suxi's (任素汐) song for the two fox sisters and Bu Ku (不苦), the song for Lu Wuyi and Ji Ling, recorded in versions by both Ju Jingyi and Tian Jiarui.

In Brief

Ending spoilerShow the ending in brief

It's bittersweet. To stop the demon Jiuying, who keeps coming back inside Lu Wuyi, the heroes go back in time and wipe out the events that created her. Lu Wuyi and Wu Wangyan both give their lives, and the world resets. In the new timeline Wu Shiguang is the Dragon Deity and finds Wu Wangyan alive with hazy memories. Ji Ling and Lu Wuyi meet again as strangers in a flower shop.

Full Ending Explained

Full spoilersShow the full ending

By the final stretch the group knows the truth about the Dragon Deity. The god they have been chasing, Chiwen, is really Ji Ling, a blind little fox from Nanshan whom the real Chiwen once saved and set up as a stand-in, with one of his dragon scales. The priest Ji Ling who has been travelling with them is a wooden puppet he made so he could walk the world. Wu Shiguang turns out to be the tenth dragon, born from the reverse scales of the nine dragon sons, which makes him Chiwen's younger brother. The real enemy is Jiuying, a nine-headed demon who wiped out the jiao clan that raised Wu Shiguang, framed Wu Wangyan for it with her ice magic and a skin mask, and now poses as the Fox King, controlling the foxes through an oracle stone. Worst of all, Lu Wuyi is not a real fox: Jiuying forged her from other foxes' flesh and blood, including one of Wu Wangyan's hearts.

In episode 26 Wu Shiguang fully becomes a dragon, the real Chiwen gives his life to finish Jiuying, and Ji Ling and Lu Wuyi marry. In episode 27 Ji Ling gives Lu Wuyi his dragon scale and fades away, and Wu Shiguang proposes to Wu Wangyan with a dragon-scale bracelet. But a hidden shard of the oracle stone lets Jiuying revive inside Lu Wuyi. In episode 28 Jiuying tries to bring down the four pillar trees that hold up the world, and Youchi is killed. Ji Ling returns from his heart-stone. Wu Shiguang kills the possessed Lu Wuyi, but Jiuying keeps coming back, and the only fix is to go back and stop Lu Wuyi from ever being made.

In episode 29 Xie Lingxi opens a rift in time, and Jin Zheng and Mo Yuntan die holding it. In the past Ji Ling reaches his full power and kills the false Fox King. Lu Wuyi pulls the oracle shard out of herself, asks Wu Shiguang to destroy it with the Guili sword, and fades away smiling. Wu Wangyan sacrifices herself to protect the pillar trees. A new oracle appears, roughly "the old dragon falls, a new dragon rises, the river flows back, and the sun and moon begin a new chapter."

In the reset world, Youchi leads the sect and is close to Mu Long. Wu Shiguang is the new Dragon Deity, with Li Jie, Hua Qi, Jin Zheng, Si Feng and Mo Yuntan all alive. Wu Wangyan wakes at Wuxiang Yue. When Wu Shiguang brings her the bracelet her memories are hazy, and he promises to tell her their story. Li Jie sets off to travel. In the last scene, in another world, Ji Ling works in a flower shop. Lu Wuyi stops to smell his white flowers, and he trades her a bouquet for her raspberries, two strangers meeting for the first time. Baidu Baike calls the structure a Möbius strip, since the ending loops back to a beginning.

We haven't finished this one ourselves; this summary is based on the episode synopses and plot overview on the drama's Baidu Baike page.

The story behind it

Painted Skin (画皮, Huapi) is a short ghost story in Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (聊斋志异, Liaozhai Zhiyi), Pu Songling's 17th-century collection of fox spirits, ghosts and demons. In the original, a scholar takes in a beautiful young woman who is really a demon wearing a painted human skin, and she tears out his heart. The story is in the public domain and has several English translations.

The drama keeps only the outline: a heart-stealing demon in disguise, which drives the opening case at Wei Manor. The fox organization, the Dragon Deity, the jiao clan and the time travel are all new. The demon's name, Xiao Wei (小唯), echoes the fox spirit Xiaowei in the 2008 film Painted Skin and its 2012 sequel, Painted Skin: The Resurrection, both starring Zhou Xun. We don't know whether the drama is officially linked to those films.

The nine sons of the dragon

Chinese legend says the dragon had nine sons, none of whom became a true dragon, and each has its own nature. Chiwen (螭吻) is the one that loves to gaze into the distance and swallows fire, which is why its figure sits on the roof ridges of traditional halls to guard against fire. The drama turns him into the Dragon Deity and adds a tenth son.

Nine-tailed foxes

The nine-tailed fox (九尾狐) appears in Chinese myth as far back as the Classic of Mountains and Seas (山海经), sometimes as a good omen and sometimes as a man-eating spirit. In later fiction, including Liaozhai, fox spirits are shape-shifters who often take human form, for love or for mischief.

The title

月鳞绮纪 (yuelin qiji) means roughly "a beautiful chronicle of moon scales." The scales point to the dragon scale that passes between characters, and to the scaled fox costumes. The working title was simply Huapi (画皮), "Painted Skin." The English title, Veil of Shadows, is Netflix's and Viki's.
