What to Expect
We haven't watched this one. This section is based on the episode summaries, the published cast list, and reviews in the Chinese press.
The first half plays like a workplace comedy set in a palace. Yu Wanyin and Xiahou Dan both know how the book is supposed to go, so they hold planning meetings, read the plot ahead of everyone else, and try to head off the drought that would doom them both. They recruit honest officials, stockpile drought-resistant crops and work out that Xie Yong'er, the book's heroine, is another transmigrator. The jokes lean on modern slang dropped into court speech. The second half turns into a war of succession, with an ambush at an imperial tomb, a coup and a prophecy that only one of the leads can live.
Chinese critics liked it. Wenhui Bao praised it for turning the usual transmigration story inside out, for its dense jokes, and for showing ordinary workers helping one another. Other reviewers found logic holes and filler in the later episodes. It was one of iQIYI's biggest hits of early 2026.

In Brief
Ending spoilerShow the ending in brief
It's a happy ending. Prince Duan's coup fails, Xiahou Dan is cured of the poison that has been killing him, and Yu Wanyin is crowned empress. The last scene jumps to the modern world, where she wakes up on a subway train and Xiahou Dan asks her "How are you?"
Full Ending Explained

The turn toward the ending comes at the Qianqiu banquet in episode 16, when an envoy from the state of Yan arrives. Yu Wanyin greets Xie Yong'er with "How are you," and Xie Yong'er realises she isn't the only one from the modern world. In episode 17 Xiahou Dan reveals himself too. Xie Yong'er, who has just lost a pregnancy, turns against Prince Duan, and in episode 22 she tells the leads the baby was his.
Episodes 19 to 21 cover the ambush at the Beishan imperial tombs. The leads survive Prince Duan's trap, kiss for the first time, and hide in the underground palace, where the Empress Dowager tries to stab Xiahou Dan. Beizhou stops her with a poison that leaves her paralysed and unable to speak. A peace treaty with Prince Tu'er of Yan follows, and in episode 24 Yu Wanyin is named empress.
The coup comes in episode 26, at the Empress Dowager's funeral. Prince Duan's men rise up calling for the death of the "witch" Yu Wanyin. A boulder crushes Prince Duan's legs, but Xie Yong'er, stalling the men chasing Yu Wanyin, is stabbed through the heart by Mu Yun. In episode 27 Xiahou Dan disappears, leaving a letter signed "Zhang San" and addressed to his wife, along with a lark hairpin. In episode 28 his death is announced. Yu Wanyin throws away his secret edict naming her regent and leads the army herself, helped by A-Bai, who turns out to be Lin Xuanying, Xiahou Dan's man inside the Right Army.
In episode 29 Xiahou Dan turns up alive in Lin Xuanying's camp, and Prince Duan learns the body in the coffin isn't the emperor's. In episode 30 the leads ride back into the capital and put down the revolt. The body was Beizhou's: he had posed as Xiahou Dan to get close to Prince Duan and died in the attempt. Prince Duan ends up in the water prison, his crushed legs amputated.
The prophecy closes in during episodes 31 and 32. Five stars line up, and the Nameless Guest's warning that "of two stars, one must fall" seems about to come true. The mute girl poisons Yu Wanyin's porridge and offers the antidote in exchange for the emperor's life. The poison isn't fatal, the mute girl takes her own life, and in the end the poison meant for Xiahou Dan works against the old one in his body and cures his headaches. The summaries also credit a remedy made from lily of the valley that Xie Yong'er had grown. Er Lan admits she is a woman and offers to resign, and Yu Wanyin proposes a school for girls instead. The harem is dismissed, Yu Wanyin is crowned, and Xiahou Dan, as Zhang San, proposes to her. The final scene shows Yu Wanyin waking up on a subway train, with Xiahou Dan beside her.

Cast and characters

The novel behind it
The drama adapts Cheng He Ti Tong (成何体统), a novel by Qi Yingjun (七英俊). Unusually for a web novel, it was serialized on Weibo rather than on a fiction site, and finished in June 2021. China Writers Network named it to its summer 2021 youth list of online fiction. It has since come out in print in two volumes. As far as we've found, there is no official English translation, so searching by the pinyin or the Chinese characters works best.
Differences from the Novel
Ending spoilerShow the differences
The novel was adapted twice before this drama, as a short-form vertical series and as an animated series. Hu Yixuan has said she took the part of Xie Yong'er after watching the animation. We haven't found a reliable side-by-side of the book and the iQIYI drama, so we can't list what changed.

Words and customs you'll hear
The title
成何体统 (cheng he ti tong) is an old set phrase meaning roughly "how unseemly!" or "what a disgrace!", the kind of thing a court official says about a breach of etiquette. It goes back at least to the Ming novel Cu Hu Lu (醋葫芦). The English title, How Dare You!?, keeps the scolding tone, and also plays on "How are you."
"How are you? Fine, thank you"
Generations of Chinese students learned English from the same textbook exchange: "How are you?" "Fine, thank you, and you?" Anyone from modern China knows the reply by heart, which makes it a perfect password for transmigrators. The drama's posters split the exchange between the two leads' fans.
Transmigration stories
A transmigration story (穿书, chuan shu, "going through the book") drops a modern person into the world of a novel, usually as a minor character who knows how the plot ends. How Dare You!? nests the idea: its heroine lands in a book whose own heroine is a transmigrator.
