What to Expect
We haven't watched this one, and it hasn't aired. This section is based on the official synopsis, the production's announcements and the source novel, and we'll replace it with a verdict once the drama finishes.
This is a historical thriller, not a romance. The setup is a road movie on water: four people who don't trust each other, a deadline that never moves, and enemies who know where they are going. Ma Boyong's novel is known for its pace, its research into Ming-dynasty daily life, and its habit of turning real history into a conspiracy plot. If you liked The Longest Day in Chang'an, also adapted from Ma Boyong, this is the closest thing to it.
Director Zhang Li made his name with serious political dramas, most famously Ming Dynasty 1566 (大明王朝1566), which many Chinese viewers rank among the best TV dramas ever made. Expect a heavier, more grounded look than the average costume drama.
The Story
In the first year of the Hongxi reign, 1425, the crown prince Zhu Zhanji arrives in Nanjing and barely survives an explosion. Then word comes that his father, the emperor, has died in Beijing. Whoever reaches the northern capital first decides who sits on the throne, and the people trying to stop him are somewhere close. River of No Return (两京十五日, "fifteen days between the two capitals") follows the prince's race of more than 2,200 li, about 1,100 kilometers, up the Grand Canal, with a Nanjing constable, a woman doctor and a junior official as his only allies. Cheng Yi and Lin Gengxin lead the iQIYI drama, directed by Zhang Li and An Wei and based on Ma Boyong's best-selling novel. iQIYI has slated it for November 2026, but hasn't announced a date.
Release Notes
iQIYI produces the drama exclusively, with Zhang Li (张黎) and An Wei (安巍) directing. It was filmed in Wuxi between October 19, 2025 and February 12, 2026. In October 2026, an iQIYI advertising sheet reported by Sina listed the release as November 2026, tentative. iQ.com, iQIYI's international site, already lists it as Coming Soon in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, with 40 episodes. The same Sina report gave 26 episodes, so treat the count as provisional until it airs. We'll add the date to our calendar as soon as iQIYI announces it.
Does River of No Return have a happy ending?
Nothing opens until you ask. The first step shows only the type of ending; the details come after.
River of No Return has not aired yet. We fill this page in after the finale.
In Brief
Ending spoilerShow the ending in brief
The drama hasn't premiered, so there's no ending yet. History gives away the headline: the real Zhu Zhanji did reach Beijing and became the Xuande Emperor in 1425. How the drama gets him there, and who survives the trip, is the story. We'll update this section after the finale.

The novel behind it
The drama adapts Liang Jing Shi Wu Ri (两京十五日) by Ma Boyong (马伯庸), a historical novel published in 2020. Ma Boyong is one of China's most adapted authors: The Longest Day in Chang'an, Luoyang, The Wind Blows from Longxi and The Lychee Road all started as his books. As far as we know, this one has no official English translation.
Differences from the Novel
Ending spoilerShow the differences
We can't compare yet. The official synopsis follows the novel's setup: the explosion in Nanjing, the emperor's death, the four companions and the fifteen-day race up the canal. We'll note changes once episodes air.

History settles the big question: the novel follows the record, and Zhu Zhanji reaches Beijing in time and takes the throne. The book's real ending is about the price of the journey and what happens to the people who got him there. We haven't confirmed the details of the final chapters ourselves, so we're leaving them out until we can check the book.

Words and customs you'll hear
The two capitals
The Ming dynasty had two capitals. The founder ruled from Nanjing, and in 1421 the Yongle Emperor moved the court north to Beijing, keeping Nanjing as a secondary capital with its own ministries. The Hongxi Emperor, Zhu Zhanji's father, planned to move back south and sent his son to Nanjing to prepare. He died in May 1425, after less than a year on the throne, while the heir was still away. That is the real gap the story drops into.
The Grand Canal
The Grand Canal ran from Hangzhou to Beijing, crossing the Yangtze downstream from Nanjing at Yangzhou, and it carried the grain that fed the northern capital. In 1425 it was the fastest road between the two capitals, which is exactly why it would be watched.
Yu Qian
Yu Qian (于谦) is a national hero in China. In 1449, after a Ming emperor was captured by the Mongols, Yu Qian organized the defense of Beijing and saved the capital. His poem about lime, which ends with a line about keeping one's integrity whatever the cost, is one of the best known in Chinese schools. Meeting him as an untested young clerk is part of the fun for Chinese viewers.
River of No Return FAQ
When does River of No Return come out?
iQIYI hasn't announced a date. Its advertising materials, reported by Sina in late October 2026, list November 2026 as the tentative release month. iQ.com shows the drama as Coming Soon. We'll update this page with the exact date and time as soon as it's confirmed.
Where can I watch River of No Return?
It's an iQIYI production, so outside mainland China it should stream on iQ.com and the iQIYI app. When we checked on October 29, 2026, iQ.com listed it as Coming Soon in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Episodes aren't out yet, so we don't know yet which will be free.
How many episodes does River of No Return have?
iQ.com lists 40 episodes. A Sina report on iQIYI's advertising materials gave 26, so the final count isn't settled, and episode length hasn't been announced either. We'll confirm both when the drama premieres. Cheng Yi and Lin Gengxin lead the cast.
Is River of No Return based on a true story?
Partly. The novel is fiction, but its frame is real: the Hongxi Emperor died suddenly in 1425 while his heir, Zhu Zhanji, was in Nanjing, and Zhu Zhanji hurried north to take the throne as the Xuande Emperor. Yu Qian was a real official too. The conspiracy and the companions are Ma Boyong's invention.

Cheng Yi plays the crown prince Zhu Zhanji and Lin Gengxin, also known as Kenny Lin, plays the constable Wu Dingyuan. Jiang Peiyao plays the doctor Su Jingxi and Wu Xingjian plays Yu Qian. Wang He and Zhang Kaiying make special appearances.
