What to Expect
We haven't watched this one. This section is based on the episode summaries, the published cast list, and reviews in the Chinese press.
The first episodes are a family drama with a sharp edge. The Fu family of Huaying competes for chastity arches, the stone gateways once raised to honour widows who never remarried, and the women of the house pay for it. Once Fu Tingyun is driven out, the story becomes a road drama: she and Zhao Ling pose as a married couple, travel from the south to the northwest frontier, and help the Sixteenth Prince follow a trail of salt fraud up to a Grand Secretary. The second half moves to the capital, where the two are married for real and their politics start to pull them apart.
Chinese reviewers praised the Ming-style costumes and sets, the real locations in Shanxi and the Dunhuang desert, and a heroine who isn't rescued by the hero so much as working beside him. The main complaints were uneven pacing, villains drawn too broadly, and the decision to give Zhao Ling as much of the story as Fu Tingyun, which readers of the novel took badly. It drew a big audience on Tencent Video and on Dragon TV.
The Story
The Road to Splendor (花开锦绣) is a 36-episode Tencent Video historical drama adapted from Zhi Zhi's novel of the same name. Fu Tingyun (Deng Enxi) grows up in a Jiangnan family that measures its worth in chastity arches. Together they get caught up in an imperial prince's investigation into the salt trade. It premiered on August 9, 2026, finished in China at the end of August, and streams outside China on WeTV with English subtitles.

The turn toward the ending starts in episode 28. Fu Tingyun's mother writes a divorce letter, her father tears it up, and Grand Secretary Yu offers him a post at the Ministry of Revenue to be rid of her. She dies, poisoned with a supposedly calming drink. Her father then wants her buried at his cottage to earn a chastity-arch reputation, and Fu Tingyun breaks with him and takes the body back to her mother's family, the Xies. Zhao Ling quietly makes her father drink the same drug and burns the cottage, and keeps it from her. The secret, and his own scheming against the Yu faction, open a rift between them.
Episodes 30 to 32 are the darkest stretch. General Mo Yi is framed, and at his own request Zhao Ling ends his life. Fu Tingyun asks for a divorce, Yu Jingxiu drugs and kidnaps her, and Fan Yake sets her free and tells her the truth about her mother. The couple make up, and Fan Yake leaves with her father's manuscripts. In episode 33 Tian Wanyi's gathering of court women wins over her father, Grand Secretary Tian, but the Zhao household is raided and the couple jailed. In episode 34 Zhao Ling drinks what everyone thinks is poison. It is a tonic, and his faked death lets him go undercover as Jiuweijiao again.
In episode 35 the evidence comes together. The gilded steelyard weights the Yu faction pushed on salt merchants turn out to be iron cased in copper. Jin Yuanbao recants his false testimony and takes 80 strokes for it. Fan Yake's books of poetry hide the faction's list of names, and Qin Feiyu brings weights from many prefectures. The emperor, the former Sixteenth Prince, orders an investigation.
In episode 36 Grand Secretary Yu tells his son to sign a confession and take all the blame. Yu Jingxiu refuses and shoves him away, and Yu hits his head and does not get up. Madam Yu stages it as a suicide with a signed confession. The emperor sees through it but settles for confiscating the family's property, and Yu Jingxiu is made a commoner. Fu Tingyun visits Madam Yu, whom she once admired, and tells her she only ever held power on men's behalf. Zhao Ling hands back the lapis stone the emperor gave him and asks to leave with his wife, and the emperor agrees.
The epilogue checks in on everyone. A Sen marries Second Miss Wang. Concubine Wu, freed, runs a shop of her own. Jin Yuanbao is famous for beating the petition drum. Yu Jingxiu writes letters in the street for a living and looks after his mother, who seems to be living in the past. Fan Yake teaches girls in the frontier town of Ganlin. Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun push their daughter on a swing.

The novel behind it
The drama adapts Hua Kai Jin Xiu (花开锦绣), a novel by Zhi Zhi (吱吱), first serialized on Qidian. Zhi Zhi also wrote Shu Nü Gong Lüe (庶女攻略) and Jiu Chong Zi (九重紫), both of them popular family-saga novels. As far as we've found, there is no official English translation, so searching by the pinyin or the Chinese characters works best.
Differences from the Novel
Ending spoilerShow the differences
The heroine's name changes from Fu Tingyun (傅庭筠) in the book to Fu Tingyun (傅庭芸) in the drama: the same sound, a different character. The novel keeps the story on her, while the drama gives Zhao Ling an equal share and adds more court politics and salt-trade plot. Readers pushed back, and the chief screenwriter, Nan Zhen (南镇), answered the criticism publicly on May 27, 2026. One fan estimate says about 60% of the script follows the book. We haven't found a second source for that.

Words and customs you'll hear
Chastity arches
A chastity arch (贞节牌坊, zhenjie paifang) was a stone gateway raised, with imperial approval, to honour a widow who never remarried or a woman who died defending her virtue. In the Ming and Qing dynasties an arch brought a family prestige and tax benefits, so families pressed their women to earn one. The drama built three arches for filming, finishing the rest with visual effects, and frames the Fu ancestral hall so that a model arch looks like the character 囚, "prisoner."
Salt smuggling
For most of imperial history the state held a monopoly on salt and sold licences to merchants, which made smuggling hugely profitable. The Ming ran its salt trade through a licence system (盐引, yanyin), and fraud in the trade was a constant worry at court. Zhao Ling's smuggling and the prince's investigation sit inside that history.
Ming style
The setting is a fictional dynasty, but the look is Ming. The team made more than 800 costumes, drawing on the Ming court record Ming Gong Shi (明宫史) and on paintings by Tang Yin and Wen Zhengming.
The title
花开锦绣 (hua kai jin xiu) means "flowers blooming in brocade," a set phrase for a bright and prosperous future. The English title, The Road to Splendor, nods to the road trip at the drama's centre. MDL also lists Escape to the Moon and Escape to Your Heart.
