What to Expect
We haven't watched this one. This section is based on English and Chinese Wikipedia, Chinese entertainment coverage and English-language reviews and recaps.
This is a household drama, not a palace one. Most of the action takes place inside the Sheng family compound and, later, inside the Gu household after Minglan marries: who sits where at dinner, who controls the accounts, whose daughter gets the better match, which concubine has the master's ear. Chinese reviewers praised how much of daily life in the Song dynasty it shows, from tea and banquets to dowries and household management. Daylight Entertainment, the studio behind Nirvana in Fire, is known for careful period detail, and coverage of the drama highlighted its sets, costumes and etiquette.
The pacing is slow, and fans of the show say that's the point. Minglan's story unfolds over many years, and the first third spends a long time on her childhood, her sisters and her grandmother's lessons. The romance with Gu Tingye starts slowly too, and they don't marry until around the midpoint. The second half follows Minglan as a married woman running a hostile household, which many viewers found the most satisfying part. English-language reviewers often compare it to a family saga more than a love story.
The cast drew a lot of attention. Zhao Liying's restrained Minglan won an audience award at the Golden Eagle Awards, and Liu Lin's comic, exasperating Madam Wang and Gao Lu's Concubine Lin became fan favorites to argue about. Zhu Yilong's Qi Heng, the first love who can't defy his mother, gave the drama its second-lead heartbreak.
The complaints: some viewers felt the first act was too long, and some found Minglan too passive in the early episodes. The ending, with a late coup plot that turns into an action finale, felt to some reviewers like a shift in tone from the domestic story that came before. Because the TV version and the streaming version have different episode counts, people discussing specific episodes online sometimes disagree about numbering.
Reception was strong. Wikipedia reports a national average rating of about 1.21% on Hunan TV, peaking at 2.03% for the final episode, and the drama won Outstanding TV Series at the 30th Golden Eagle Awards. A 2021 blog listing gave its Douban rating as 7.7, while English Wikipedia lists 8.1, so the figure depends on the date and source.
Content notes: death in childbirth, domestic cruelty, physical punishment of servants and family members, a poisoning, a violent attack on a woman in labor, and an armed attack on a household.
The Story
Sheng Minglan is the sixth daughter of a mid-ranking official in Song dynasty China, and her mother is one of his concubines. In a household where everything depends on rank, that makes her nobody. When she loses her mother in childbirth, partly because the family's favorite concubine kept help away, the young Minglan learns that being clever and noticed is dangerous. Her grandmother takes her in and teaches her to keep her head down, her mouth shut and her plans to herself. Over the years Minglan watches her sisters' marriages, her father's favoritism and the feuds of the women around her, waiting for the moment when patience pays. It aired on Hunan TV in 78 episodes and streams internationally in a 73-episode version, and it's based on a web novel by Guan Xin Ze Luan.

This account comes from published episode synopses on Chinese and English Wikipedia and from English-language fan recaps, not from watching. Episode numbers below follow the 73-episode streaming version, and recaps don't always agree on them.
The marriage. Gu Tingye wins Minglan's hand through a careful campaign of his own, removing a rival match and using leverage over her family. They marry around episode 40. She moves into the Gu household, where his stepmother, Lady Qin, smiles at her and works against her.
The poisoning. Late in the drama, Old Madam Sheng is poisoned in a plot involving Madam Kang, Madam Wang's sister. Synopses say Madam Wang was drawn into it. The old lady survives. Minglan pushes for justice even though it means confronting her own family, Madam Kang is punished, and recaps say Madam Wang is sent away for a time.
The attack in childbirth. In episode 67, Madam Kang breaks in and attacks Minglan with a knife while she is in labor. Gu Tingye kills her, and Minglan gives birth to their son.
The trap. Gu Tingye is stripped of his titles and sent to the frontier, and word comes that he has died. The Empress Dowager's faction stages a coup, and assassins attack the Gu household. Minglan hides the children and holds the house. In the final episode, Gu Tingye returns alive. Recaps explain that his disgrace and death were part of a setup with the Emperor to draw the Empress Dowager's faction out. The coup collapses, and the Empress Dowager withdraws to a separate palace.
Lady Qin. Gu Tingye's stepmother, whose schemes have been exposed and whose son is in trouble, sets fire to the family's ancestral hall and dies in the fire, according to synopses.
Qi Heng. Minglan's first love settles into his marriage with Shen Hezhen, who became Minglan's friend, and the drama suggests they'll have a good life.
The last scene. The drama ends with Minglan and Gu Tingye at peace with their children and their family.

The novel behind it
The drama adapts Zhi Fou? Zhi Fou? Ying Shi Lü Fei Hong Shou (知否?知否?应是绿肥红瘦) by Guan Xin Ze Luan (关心则乱), a web novel first published on JJWXC. Chinese Wikipedia says the first mainland print edition came out in 2013 under a different title. The same author wrote the novel behind Love Like the Galaxy. As far as we know, there is no official English translation.
Differences from the Novel
Ending spoilerShow the differences
English Wikipedia and Chinese coverage point to several changes:
- Minglan herself. In the novel, Minglan is a 21st-century woman who wakes up in the body of a Song dynasty girl, although she rarely uses modern knowledge. The drama drops the time travel and makes her a woman of her own era.
- Qi Heng. The drama builds a love triangle around Qi Heng that is much weaker in the book, which made his storyline one of the most discussed parts of the adaptation.
- The villains. Wikipedia notes that opposition to Minglan is less violent in the novel. The drama sharpens several antagonists and adds more dramatic confrontations, including in the finale.
- Gu Tingye's past. The drama changes parts of Gu Tingye's earlier romantic history and his family subplots.

Words and customs you'll hear
A young unmarried woman, or the way to address one. In historical households it's also how servants refer to the family's daughters.
Full explanationHuangshang皇上 · huáng shangHow courtiers, consorts, and servants address or refer to the emperor, especially in dramas set in the Qing dynasty.
Full explanationXiaojie小姐 · xiǎo jiěMiss, the way servants address the unmarried daughter of a wealthy or noble household; in modern Chinese, simply "Miss."
Full explanationLegitimate and concubine-born children
The whole drama runs on a distinction between children of the principal wife (di, 嫡) and children of concubines (shu, 庶). A legitimate daughter could expect a better marriage, more money and more respect, while a concubine's daughter depended on her father's goodwill. Minglan is shu, which is why her marriage to a high-ranking man looks so improbable. One of the drama's alternate English titles, Legend of the Concubine's Daughter, comes from this.
Young ladies of the household
The Sheng daughters are addressed by the servants as the household's young ladies, a xiaojie for each, usually with a number for their birth order. Minglan is the sixth. Unmarried girls of their class rarely left the inner quarters, which is why banquets, temple visits and polo matches become the places where marriages are arranged.
The emperor and the court
Sheng Hong's career, and later Gu Tingye's, depends on the huangshang, the emperor, and on the struggle over who will succeed him. The drama's politics stay mostly offstage until the final arc, when a fight between the Emperor and the Empress Dowager reaches into Minglan's home.
The title's poem
The Chinese title quotes a short poem by the Song dynasty poet Li Qingzhao, in which a woman asks her maid about the begonias after a night of rain. The answer is that the green leaves have thrived while the red flowers have thinned. The line is often read as a quiet observation that time passes and things change, which suits a story told over many years.
