What to Expect

We haven't watched this one. This section is based on English and Chinese Wikipedia, Chinese and English press coverage and English-language reviews and recaps.

Eternal Love is often described as the drama that turned xianxia into a mainstream hit. It was one of the most-watched Chinese series of 2017, and many of the genre's later habits, such as love across several lives, a heroine with hidden identities, lavish heavenly sets and a theme song that becomes a karaoke staple, are traced back to it by Chinese and English commentators.

The story moves in three phases, matching the "three lives" in the Chinese title: Bai Qian's years at Kunlun as the disciple Si Yin, her life as the mortal Su Su in the Heavenly Palace, and her reunion with Ye Hua as herself. The middle stretch, set in the palace, is the most tragic, and English-language reviewers often single it out as the emotional core. The final third shifts back to romance and then to a war against the Ghost Lord.

Viewers praised the scale of the production, the peach-blossom scenery, the chemistry between the leads, and the second couple, Bai Fengjiu and Donghua, who proved popular enough to get their own drama later. The complaints are about length and pacing, effects that look dated now, and a story that some found melodramatic, especially the scheming of the palace villain, Su Jin. The romance has a large age gap built in, since Bai Qian is far older than Ye Hua, and the drama treats it as a running joke.

A practical tip from English-language viewing guides: keep track of names. The heroine is Si Yin at Kunlun, Su Su in the mortal world and Bai Qian everywhere else, and other characters call her by titles depending on their rank and relationship to her. Mark Chao plays two different men, Mo Yuan and Ye Hua, who share a face for a reason the drama explains late. Bai Fengjiu calls Bai Qian her aunt,. That relationship explains why Fengjiu defers to her. Once those relationships are clear, the drama's jumps between eras are much easier to follow.

Its Douban rating was more modest than its viewership: China Daily reported 6.4 in 2017, and a 2021 blog listing gave 6.5. Wikipedia reports that it passed 50 billion online views by August 2018. On TV, Dragon TV's average rating was about 1.29%, with a peak of 1.91% for the final episodes on March 1, 2017.

Content notes: fantasy violence and war, a pregnancy in captivity, a scene in which a character's eyes are taken, a suicide attempt by jumping from a terrace, and the death of a parent figure.

The Story

Bai Qian is a fox goddess from Qingqiu, a high-ranking deity who has lived for tens of thousands of years. Long ago she disguised herself as a young man to study under Mo Yuan, the God of War at Kunlun Mountain, and that apprenticeship ended in war, betrayal and her master's sacrifice. Much later, stripped of her powers and memories, she wakes up in the mortal world as an ordinary woman named Su Su, and a stranger falls in love with her. He is Ye Hua, the Crown Prince of Heaven, and he looks exactly like the master she lost. Eternal Love (三生三世十里桃花) is a 58-episode xianxia drama starring Yang Mi and Mark Chao, which aired on Dragon TV and Zhejiang TV in 2017. It's based on a novel by Tang Qi Gong Zi, known in English as To the Sky Kingdom, and its English title on some platforms is Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms.

Release Notes

Eternal Love premiered on Dragon TV and Zhejiang TV on January 30, 2017, and ended on March 1, 2017, with 58 episodes. It was directed by Lin Yufen, written by Hong Qiu and produced by Gcoo Entertainment, part of the Huace group. Filming ran from February to June 2016 at Xiangshan Movie and TV Town and in Puzhehei, Yunnan. TVB in Hong Kong broadcast it from May 2017.

Outside China, Netflix added it in November 2018. From the US on October 25, 2026, Viki had all 58 episodes free with ads.

There is no season 2. The closest follow-up is Eternal Love of Dream (2020), based on Tang Qi Gong Zi's novel The Pillow Book, which tells Bai Fengjiu and Donghua's story with Dilraba Dilmurat and Gao Weiguang returning. It isn't a direct continuation of Bai Qian and Ye Hua's story. The 2017 film Once Upon a Time, starring Liu Yifei and Yang Yang, retold the main story in a single feature and was poorly received on Douban.

The ending theme, "Bracing the Chill" (凉凉), sung by Zhang Bichen and Yang Zongwei, became one of the most covered Chinese songs of 2017. Jason Zhang sings the opening theme, "Three Lives, Three Worlds" (三生三世).

Su Su and the terrace. In her mortal life, Su Su marries Ye Hua in secret and is brought to the Heavenly Palace pregnant. Su Jin, who wants Ye Hua for herself, schemes against her, and Su Su loses her eyes and is framed for crimes she didn't commit. After giving birth to their son, A Li, Su Su throws herself from the Zhuxian Terrace. The fall restores her as Bai Qian, and she drinks a potion from her friend Zhe Yan to forget her life as Su Su.

Three hundred years later. Bai Qian meets Ye Hua again as her fiancé, without recognizing him. He courts her a second time. Her memories eventually return, along with the truth about what Su Jin did and why Ye Hua seemed unable to protect her, and the two of them work through the past.

Qing Cang's escape. The Ghost Lord breaks free from the Donghuang Bell, where Mo Yuan sealed him tens of thousands of years earlier. Ye Hua kills him and gives up his own life to seal the bell.

Mo Yuan returns. Bai Qian's master, whose body she had kept preserved for 70,000 years, finally wakes up after his soul is restored. Synopses explain that Ye Hua and Mo Yuan are connected by blood, which accounts for their shared face.

Reunion. Ye Hua lies in a crystal coffin for three years. He then wakes up, and he and Bai Qian are reunited for good, with A Li. The drama ends on their happy reunion under the peach blossoms.

Fengjiu and Donghua. The second couple's story is left unresolved at the end. It continues in the novel The Pillow Book and its 2020 drama adaptation.

Identity Reveals

Ending spoilerShow identity reveals

Bai Qian lives under three names. At Kunlun she is Si Yin, a male disciple, and only some characters know she's a woman. In the mortal world she is Su Su, with no memory of being a goddess. When her memories return, everyone has to reckon with what happened to Su Su. The other major reveal is Ye Hua's face: he looks exactly like Mo Yuan, and the drama eventually explains the blood tie between them.

The novel behind it

The drama adapts San Sheng San Shi Shi Li Tao Hua (三生三世十里桃花) by Tang Qi Gong Zi (唐七公子), a fantasy romance first serialized online in 2008. It has an official English translation: Amazon Crossing published it as To the Sky Kingdom in August 2016, in paperback and for Kindle. The novel was also adapted into a 2017 film, Once Upon a Time, which got a much weaker Douban score of about 4.0.

The novel has a long-running plagiarism controversy. Since 2008, readers have accused it of copying passages from Tao Hua Zhai (桃花债), a novel by Da Feng Gua Guo (大风刮过) completed on JJWXC in 2007. Tang Qi Gong Zi denied it, and in August 2017 published a forensic report she had commissioned that found no infringement, which critics questioned. Da Feng Gua Guo said in 2015 that they had no plans to sue, and as far as we know no court has ruled on it.

Differences from the Novel

We haven't found a reliable side-by-side comparison. Chinese coverage generally describes the drama as a fairly faithful adaptation that spreads a single novel across 58 episodes, with more time for Bai Qian's years at Kunlun, the Ghost Tribe war and the supporting characters. We'll add specifics once we can confirm them.

Novel Ending

Words and customs you'll hear

Xianxia and the heavenly hierarchy

Eternal Love is xianxia, Chinese fantasy about gods and immortals. Its heaven works like an imperial court, with a Heavenly Emperor, a crown prince, consorts and strict rank. Deities gain power over tens of thousands of years of cultivation, which is why the age gaps between characters are so large.

Master and disciple

Bai Qian's bond with Mo Yuan follows the traditional relationship between a master and a disciple, which in Chinese fantasy often carries the weight of a family tie. A disciple owes the master loyalty for life, and a shizun, or revered master, is treated almost like a father. That debt explains Bai Qian's decades of devotion to Mo Yuan's body.

The nine-tailed foxes of Qingqiu

Nine-tailed foxes come from early Chinese mythology, where Qingqiu (青丘) is the land they come from. In older stories they were omens or tricksters. Modern fantasy dramas often turn them into a noble clan of gods, which is what Bai Qian's family is here.

Peach blossoms

Peach blossoms are linked to romance in Chinese culture, and a person's "peach blossom luck" means their luck in love. The "ten miles of peach blossoms" in the title is Zhe Yan's peach forest, the drama's most famous setting.

Are Ye Hua and Mo Yuan the same person?

SpoilerShow the answer
Ending spoilerReveal the truth about Ye Hua and Mo Yuan

No. Mark Chao plays both, and the drama explains that they look identical because they are related by blood. Mo Yuan is Bai Qian's master, whose body she kept for 70,000 years, while Ye Hua is the man she loves. Mo Yuan wakes up near the end.

Is Eternal Love based on a novel?

Yes. It's based on San Sheng San Shi Shi Li Tao Hua by Tang Qi Gong Zi, first serialized online in 2008. Yes. Amazon Crossing published an official English translation, To the Sky Kingdom, in August 2016, in paperback and as a Kindle ebook. It's the same novel the drama adapts. The ending song, "Bracing the Chill" (凉凉), is the famous one. Zhang Bichen and Yang Zongwei sing it, and it became one of China's most covered songs of 2017. Jason Zhang sings the opening theme, "Three Lives, Three Worlds" (三生三世). Other soundtrack songs include tracks by Yisa Yu and Dong Zhen.
