The story, without spoilers

What to Expect

We haven't watched this one. This section is based on episode summaries, platform listings and Chinese and Taiwanese coverage, and we'll replace it with a verdict once we have one.

It is a sweet, slow-building romance with a time jump, not a plot-heavy drama. The story is set in a 1990s-style fishing village, built as a set in Shandong, and TVBS describes a dual timeline, with school years and the years after graduation. The early episodes are small and domestic: a stolen laptop, a village feast, flyers for the barbershop, a night on the beach. Chinese media pitched the leads as a "pseudo-sibling" (伪骨科) pair, meaning people who are treated as family in the story but aren't related by blood, and as two people who rescue each other.

Chinese reception was split. The drama topped Chinese satellite TV ratings on many nights, and Mango TV said it set a platform record for a non-period drama's first 24 hours. But Chinese outlets also reported that it opened on Douban around 6 out of 10, with more than half of early raters giving one or two stars, and that viewers were divided on its pacing and the romance. Early fans praised the leads' chemistry and the summer-town atmosphere. There is also a travel variety show with the two leads, Yaoyan Yixia (耀眼一夏), which is separate from the drama.

The Story

Qing Ye grew up rich in Beijing, with a quick mind and a sharper tongue. In her senior year of high school her father is taken in for investigation and her accounts are frozen, and she is sent to live with her aunt in Zhazhating, a seaside fishing town, above the aunt's barbershop. There she meets Xing Wu, a blond local with a reputation as the school's troublemaker, who is working to keep his family afloat. They start out unable to stand each other and slowly change each other's lives. Dazzling (耀眼) is a Mango TV and Hunan TV youth romance starring Guan Xiaotong and Li Yunrui, directed by Zhu Dongning (祝东宁) and adapted from Shi Jiuyuan's novel. It aired from May 27, 2026, and streams internationally on Viki and Mango TV.

Release Notes

Dazzling premiered on May 27, 2026 on Mango TV at 12:00, with SVIP members one episode ahead, and the same evening on Hunan TV's Golden Eagle slot at 20:10. Sources disagree on the episode count. Viki, iQ.com's listing and several Chinese video sites say 30, while iQIYI's China page, a Sina premiere report and TVBS say 36, which looks like the figure announced before the premiere. We've gone with 30. The online finale is listed as June 10, 2026, and Chinese reports say Hunan TV's run ended around June 15.

Filming was announced on June 8, 2025, and the production used a 1990s fishing village built on location in Shandong. Zhu Dongning directed and Liu Fei wrote the screenplay. Liu Yuning (刘宇宁) sings the theme song, and TVBS lists two more songs: Yi Bai Ke Xingxing (一百颗星星), sung by the two leads, and Ziyou de Xiatian (自由的夏天) by Gigi Leung (梁咏琪). Mango TV reported 3.12 million pre-premiere reservations, which it called a record for a non-period drama on the platform.

Full Ending Explained

Full spoilersShow the full ending

This account comes from Chinese finale coverage and a viewer's recap, not from watching, and the sources don't agree on every detail.

The reunion. The finale aired online on June 10, 2026. Qing Ye has returned to Zhazhating, and the reports say Xing Wu, who had been living elsewhere, learned of it through Li Lanfang and flew back on the earliest flight. One recap has Qing Ye running into him at a blind-date gathering. He waits for her at the seaside lighthouse, and when she arrives they kiss at sunset and become a couple. That evening he reportedly posts a photo to announce it. A running detail is a hair tie she left behind five years earlier, which he kept.

Where the two ended up. According to a viewer's recap, Xing Wu missed the college entrance exam while saving a family member, retook it, and went on to study aircraft design, paying off his family's debts with scholarships and patent fees. He is said to have become an aerospace engineer, though sources name different universities. One report says Qing Ye's father's case is cleared and she goes back to Beijing, where she thrives at work.

The rest of the cast. The same recap says the classmates Shi Min and Pang Hu marry and become teachers in their hometown, Cao Fan starts a business in Shenzhen, Ye Yingjian studies abroad and later does business overseas, and Huang Mao becomes a truck driver who leads a fleet. We couldn't check these against a second source.

  • Qing Ye (Guan Xiaotong): a Beijing heiress whose family collapses in her last year of school. She is proud and quick-tongued, and in Zhazhating she helps out at the barbershop with promotions and new haircuts.
  • Xing Wu (Li Yunrui): a rough, loyal town teenager with a fearsome reputation who works to support his family and neglects his studies. He repeatedly steps in when Qing Ye is in trouble.
  • Li Lanfang (Gao Lu): the barbershop owner. Sing Tao describes her as Qing Ye's aunt, and a Sohu piece says she is Xing Wu's mother, adopted into Qing Ye's mother's family as a girl. That link is the "pseudo-sibling" thread.
  • Jin Shanxi (Mao Junjie): a friend of Li Lanfang's and the mother of Pang Hu, who wants him to make something of himself.
  • Zhou Guimei (Bao Qijing): an older woman in town who looks after Qing Ye and guides Xing Wu.

Identity Reveals

Ending spoilerShow identity reveals

There are none to speak of. The twists in this drama are about circumstances, such as the father's investigation and a revoked study-abroad place, not hidden identities.

The novel behind it

The drama adapts Yao Yan (耀眼), a novel by Shi Jiuyuan (时玖远) published on the web fiction site Jinjiang Literature City (晋江文学城, JJWXC). Shi Jiuyuan is also credited as a screenwriter alongside Liu Fei (刘飞). A Taiwanese print edition came out in three volumes, and the publisher describes a fallen heiress and a street-smart boy in a rough town. We haven't read the book, and as far as we know there is no official English translation.

In the novel, as the publisher and press describe it, Qing Ye is sent to Zhazhating after her father goes to prison, and her new home includes a cousin with no blood tie to her. The drama keeps the town, the barbershop and the "pseudo-sibling" setup, but we haven't compared it chapter by chapter.

Words and customs you'll hear

Pseudo-sibling romance

Wei guke (伪骨科) is internet slang for a romance between two people who are raised as relatives but aren't related by blood. It is a popular hook in Chinese youth fiction. It tends to play on the closeness of a shared home and the taboo of family labels. The drama's marketing leaned on it heavily.

The college entrance exam

The gaokao (高考), China's national university entrance exam, shapes much of the story. For Xing Wu, retaking it later and getting into a good engineering program is the way out of a small town, and it is why the story's time jump matters.

How many episodes does Dazzling have?

Dazzling has 30 episodes of about 45 minutes, according to Viki and iQ.com. Some Chinese sites and pre-release reports say 36, so the count is disputed. The drama finished airing in June 2026, so every episode is out and you can watch straight through.

Yes. Dazzling is adapted from the web novel Yao Yan (耀眼) by Shi Jiuyuan, first published on Jinjiang Literature City. Shi Jiuyuan is also credited as a screenwriter. We know of no official English translation, so the drama is the main way to follow the story in English.

SpoilerShow the answer
Minor spoilerReveal whether the leads get together
