What to Expect
We haven't watched this one. This section is based on platform listings, HK01's cast guide, episode summaries and Chinese coverage, and we'll replace it with a verdict once we have one.
It is a youth romance that splits into two time frames: the school years, and a workplace story set a decade later. The leads are legally step-siblings, because Zhou Wan's mother has married into Lu Xixiao's family, but they have no blood tie and the story treats it as a source of tension. The first episode is small and character-led: a broken water pipe that sprays the schoolyard, a morning assembly, a secret trade in study notes, and a grandmother who needs expensive medicine. The later half turns toward a mystery about the old factory accident.
Chinese reception was split. Reviewers praised the soft, summery atmosphere and the soundtrack. Critics said the plot logic was thin, the supporting characters were used as plot tools, and the drama departs from the novel. Taiwan's NOWnews reported a Douban score of 4.8 after the finale, and we haven't seen a second figure. A content note: the drama includes illness, a workplace accident and some violence.
The Story
Zhou Wan is a determined top student who needs money for her gravely ill grandmother's treatment. She turns to Lu Xixiao, the rebellious heir of a wealthy family and the stepson of her estranged mother. What starts as a calculated approach turns into a first love, then misunderstandings pull the two apart. Ten years later they meet again at work, drawn back together by an old factory accident. Never-Ending Summer (炽夏) is a 29-episode Mango TV and Hunan TV drama starring Bao Shangen and Daniel Zhou, directed by Xu Zhaoren (许肇任) and Huang Changzuo (黄常祚) and adapted from Tian Cu Yu's novel Zhui Luo (坠落). It premiered on June 16, 2026, and streams internationally on iQ.com and Mango TV, with a Viki page as well.
Release Notes
Never-Ending Summer premiered on June 16, 2026. Mango TV members could watch from 12:00 daily, SVIP members got one episode a day ahead, and Hunan TV aired it in its Golden Eagle exclusive-drama slot from 20:10. The finale is listed as June 30, 2026, by most sources, including Chinese finale recaps. One schedule piece we saw gave June 26, which conflicts with the rest.
Xu Zhaoren and Huang Changzuo are credited as directors, though a few outlets list only Xu. Chinese summaries say Daniel Zhou sings the theme song, Yinhe Zhuiluo Shi (银河坠落时). They list a closing song, FROZEN HEART, and an insert song, Meng Yu Huanyou (梦与环游), but we couldn't confirm who sings those. Songwriting credits differ between sources, so we leave them out. Mango TV's English YouTube channel (MangoTV English) also has English-subtitled uploads of at least some episodes.

Full Ending Explained
Full spoilersShow the full ending
This account comes from Chinese finale recaps (Sohu, NetEase 163, China.com, TVmao and NOWnews), not from watching, and the sources differ on details.
The reconciliation and proposals. The finale aired on June 30, 2026. Several recaps agree that Zhou Wan and Lu Xixiao reunite and propose to each other. Zhou Wan buys back a handheld game console she once threw away, and in a NetEase recap she produces a ring after a rematch of an arcade game they played years earlier. Lu Xixiao then sets up an indoor snow scene at a pool and proposes on one knee, and Zhou Wan answers with a kiss.
The fourth-wall finish. After the proposals, China.com says, the two turn to the camera and announce that in the final episode they got married, then jump into the empty pool and the episode ends. Reactions were divided. NOWnews describes the finale differently: it has the pair held by kidnappers, Zhou Wan freeing herself, and a wedding back at their old high school. China.com mentions a kidnapping scene but treats the wedding as the camera joke, so we can't say whether a wedding is actually shown.
The factory accident. According to a single Sohu recap, the truth goes back about 23 years. Lu Xixiao's father, Lu Zhongyue, is said to have cut corners on materials at a building-supplies factory and then blamed Zhou Wan's father, who was jailed and later died. Zhou Wan's mother is said to testify, and Lu Xixiao hands evidence of his father's misuse of safety funds to investigators. We couldn't check this against a second source.
Where everyone ends up. The same recap says Guo Xiangling sells the Lu family villa, sets up a fund for the victims and opens a flower shop, while Zhou Wan opens a safety-investigation office and Lu Xixiao moves his company into safety equipment. A TVmao page says Lu Xixiao finishes a painting his late mother left unfinished and plans a solo show, Jiang Yan resigns and wishes Zhou Wan well, and Gu Meng and Jiang Fan get back together. Each of these rests on one source.

Identity Reveals

There are no hidden identities to speak of. The reveals are about the past: what really happened in the factory accident and how the Lu family was involved.
The novel behind it
The drama adapts Zhui Luo (坠落), a novel by Tian Cu Yu (甜醋鱼) published on the web fiction site Jinjiang Literature City (晋江文学城, JJWXC). We haven't read the book, and as far as we know there is no official English title or translation. Tian Cu Yu is not credited as a screenwriter in the sources we saw. The screenplay is credited to Gao Qiqi (高伽绮), Tong Shuangshuang (童霜霜) and Cui Xiaotong (崔晓彤).
Chinese coverage says the drama changed the novel substantially, and some readers were unhappy about it. We haven't compared the two, so we can't say which changes matter.

Words and customs you'll hear
Step-sibling romance
The leads become step-siblings when Zhou Wan's mother marries Lu Xixiao's father. Chinese internet slang calls this setup wei guke (伪骨科): a romance between people labelled as siblings who share no blood. It is a common hook in Chinese youth fiction and plays on the closeness of a shared home and the weight of family labels.
The heir
Lu Xixiao belongs to the taizi ye (太子爷) type, literally "the prince" of a rich family, an heir who is expected to take over the business. Chinese romances often pair him with a self-made student like Zhou Wan, which gives the story its money and class tension.
