What to Expect

We haven't watched this one. This section is based on the official episode synopses, the production's own descriptions and Chinese and English coverage, and we'll replace it with a verdict once we have one.

Go Ahead is a family drama first and a romance second. Its first act covers the children's school years in a seaside city (it was filmed in Xiamen), with the warmth and small comedies of a household run by two fathers who are improvising. The middle act jumps nine years, when the boys come home as adults and the three have to work out what they are to each other. The last stretch is about the parents who left, and whether they can be forgiven.

What viewers praised. Chinese coverage singled out the first half: the fathers, the children's bond and the way the drama shows grief and abandonment through ordinary family life. Tan Songyun, Song Weilong and Zhang Xincheng were widely praised for making the three feel like siblings. The show was a ratings success, with a CSM average of 2.131% on Hunan TV, and Mango TV reported more than 4.5 billion views. China's broadcasting regulator later named it one of the outstanding works for overseas communication of 2020, and it has since been remade in Korea and Vietnam.

What viewers complained about. Reviews describe a "high start, low finish". Many Chinese viewers felt the middle shifted too much toward romance, that the adult years leaned on melodrama, and that the final episodes forgave Ling Xiao's mother too quickly. Some supporting characters' futures are left open. English Wikipedia reports a Douban score of 6.9, but we haven't confirmed the date of that figure.

The three leads. The drama gives each of its children a different wound. Jianjian lost her mother and fears being left. Ziqiu was left and fears being a burden. Ling Xiao was blamed and fears that love has to be earned. According to The Paper and other Chinese reviews, the strongest episodes are the ones where those fears collide, such as the boys' departure after high school and their return nine years later. Chinese coverage also notes that the romance between Jianjian and Ling Xiao is set up slowly and that the drama keeps Ziqiu in the role of brother rather than rival.

The adult years. Once the boys come back, the drama widens to Jianjian's roommates, Tang Can and Qi Mingyue. Qi Mingyue's story about a mother who controls every part of her life mirrors Ling Xiao's, and Tang Can's career struggles add some lighter workplace material. Reviewers were split on these subplots: some found them a useful contrast, others felt they took time away from the core family.

Pacing. The Chinese broadcast is 46 episodes. The international version on iQIYI, Prime Video and DVD is 40 episodes, so expect slightly different episode numbers in recaps.

Content notes. The drama deals with the death of a child, a parent's death from pregnancy-related illness, parental abandonment, emotional abuse by a parent, and a suicide attempt by a parent in its last episodes. Mental health struggles, especially Ling Xiao's guilt and withdrawal, run throughout.

The Story

Li Jianjian loses her mother when she is small, and her father, Li Haichao, raises her above his noodle shop. Then two boys arrive. He Ziqiu's mother leaves him with Li Haichao and doesn't come back. Ling Xiao, the quiet son of the police officer next door, has lost his little sister in an accident, and his mother has walked out on the family. The two fathers decide to raise all three children together, and the result is a family made of two dads and three kids. After high school the boys leave, one to Singapore and one to Britain, and Jianjian feels abandoned. Years later they come back. Go Ahead (以家人之名) is a 46-episode original drama starring Tan Songyun, Song Weilong and Zhang Xincheng, with Tu Songyan and Zhang Xilin as the fathers. It aired on Hunan TV and Mango TV in 2020 and reached international viewers through iQIYI and Netflix.

It is not based on a novel. Ding Ziguang (丁梓光) directed it from a script by Shui Qianmo (水阡墨) and Wang Xiongcheng (王雄成), and Huace Pictures produced it.

Release Notes

Go Ahead premiered on Hunan TV on August 10, 2020, at 8 p.m., and streamed on Mango TV the same night for members, with free viewers a day behind. The finale aired on September 6, 2020. Its CSM ratings averaged 2.131% and peaked at 3.096%, according to Chinese Wikipedia. Filming ran from September to December 2019 in Xiamen. It later aired on Shenzhen TV from October 24, 2020, and on Hong Kong's J2 in February 2021.

Internationally, iQIYI's global service began streaming it on October 8, 2020, using a 40-episode cut. Chinese Wikipedia says Netflix released the full series on September 22, 2020, in some regions, but our check found it unavailable from where we looked, so we haven't listed it above. From the US on October 25, 2026, iQ.com had episode 1 free and the rest for VIP members, and Prime Video carried the 40-episode version through the Toku add-on channel. Chinese Wikipedia also lists WeTV, Viki and Taiwanese services, and it has streamed in the Philippines and Vietnam through local partners. We haven't confirmed what the shorter international cut removes.

There is no second season. The story has been remade twice: in Korea as Family by Choice (JTBC, 2024) and in Vietnam as Cha tôi, người ở lại (VTV3, 2025).

The opening song is "Fearless" (无畏) by Ma Di, and the ending song is "I'll Be Here" (我会守在这里) by Mao Buyi. Tan Songyun sings the insert song "Like A Breeze".

In Brief

Ending spoilerShow the ending in brief

Go Ahead has a happy ending. Li Jianjian and Ling Xiao end up together. Ling Xiao's mother, who tried to separate them, reconciles with her son. Li Haichao marries He Ziqiu's mother, He Mei, which officially makes Ziqiu part of the Li family, and the drama closes with the whole family posing for a portrait.

Full Ending Explained

Full spoilersShow the full ending

This account comes from published synopses of the final episodes (mainly Marie Claire Taiwan's) and Chinese coverage, not from watching. Episode numbers follow the 46-episode Chinese broadcast.

Chen Ting's last stand. Ling Xiao's mother, Chen Ting, has never accepted Jianjian. In episode 45 she tries to break the couple up by pushing her son toward another match. She is controlling and still raw from her daughter's death years earlier, for which she once blamed Ling Xiao.

The turn. Chen Ting reads a private "tree hole" post that Jianjian wrote online, in which Jianjian describes her feelings about Ling Xiao and his mother. It changes how Chen Ting sees her. Soon after, Chen Ting attempts suicide and is rescued. She and Ling Xiao reconcile, and she accepts the relationship. Many Chinese viewers called this sequence rushed, arguing that years of cruelty were washed away in a single episode.

Jianjian and Ling Xiao. With his mother's opposition gone, Jianjian and Ling Xiao are together at the end. The drama does not show a wedding.

He Ziqiu and two marriages. He Mei, who left Ziqiu with Li Haichao as a child and returned when he was an adult, has developed real feelings for Li Haichao. The two register their marriage, and with that Ziqiu is added to the Li family's household register, legally becoming what he has been all along: Li Haichao's son and Jianjian's brother. Ziqiu's own love life is left mostly unresolved.

The family photo. The drama ends at a photo studio, where Jianjian, Ziqiu, Ling Xiao and the fathers sit for a family portrait, a callback to the drama's Chinese title, which means "in the name of family".

What's left open. According to Marie Claire Taiwan's recap and viewer discussion it cites, several threads end without a clear resolution, including Ziqiu's romantic future and parts of the roommates' stories. Chinese viewers' main complaint about the finale was less about where the characters land than how fast they get there: the reconciliation with Chen Ting and the He Mei marriage both happen within the last two episodes. We haven't confirmed whether the 40-episode international cut ends at exactly the same point, though synopses for both versions describe the same final scenes.

Identity Reveals

Ending spoilerShow identity reveals

There are no hidden identities, but the drama keeps two family histories back and reveals them over time. Ling Xiao's withdrawal is explained by his little sister's death in an accident and his mother's decision to blame him for it before leaving and remarrying in Singapore. Ziqiu's backstory is that his father refused to acknowledge him and his mother left him behind, which is why he fears being sent away again. Neither secret is a twist the audience is kept from for long, but both shape how the adult characters react when the absent mothers come back into their lives in the second half.

Words and customs you'll hear

Brothers who aren't

Jianjian grows up calling both boys gege (哥哥), "older brother", even though none of them are related. Chinese uses family words for close friends and neighbors, so the word doesn't settle the question of whether a romance is possible, which is part of the drama's tension. Our glossary explains how gege works.

The household register

Every Chinese family has a hukou, a household registration booklet that records who belongs to the household and where they are registered. It matters for schooling, housing and many official procedures. When Li Haichao and He Mei register their marriage and Ziqiu is entered into the Li household register, it is a legal as well as emotional homecoming.

The gaokao and going abroad

The gaokao is China's national university entrance exam, and the summer after it is when families decide children's futures. Both boys leave China after high school, one to support his mother in Singapore and one to study in Britain, and this break is the drama's central wound.

Single fathers

Chinese family dramas usually center on mothers. A home run by two single fathers, one of them raising a child who isn't his, was unusual enough that Chinese reviewers singled it out, and it's a big part of why the show's first half is remembered.

Go Ahead FAQ

How many episodes does Go Ahead have?

Go Ahead has 46 episodes in China, where it aired on Hunan TV and Mango TV, each about 45 minutes. International versions on iQIYI, Prime Video and DVD use a 40-episode cut, so episode numbers in English recaps may not match. The whole drama has been complete since September 2020.

Where can I watch Go Ahead?

From the US on October 25, 2026, iQIYI's international site had the 40-episode cut, with episode 1 free and the rest for VIP members. Prime Video had it through the Toku add-on channel. Chinese Wikipedia says Netflix carried it in some regions. In China it streams on Mango TV.

Who does Li Jianjian end up with in Go Ahead?

SpoilerShow the answer
Minor spoilerReveal who Jianjian ends up with

Li Jianjian ends up with Ling Xiao. Ling Xiao's mother tries to split them up in the final episodes but eventually reconciles with her son and accepts the relationship. He Ziqiu stays her brother, and becomes one officially when his mother marries Jianjian's father.

Does Go Ahead have a happy ending?

SpoilerShow the answer
Minor spoilerReveal how it ends

Yes. Jianjian and Ling Xiao are together, Ling Xiao reconciles with his mother, and Li Haichao marries He Ziqiu's mother, making Ziqiu legally part of the Li family. The drama ends with the whole family sitting for a portrait. Some viewers felt the reconciliations were rushed.

What happens to Ling Xiao's mother in Go Ahead?

SpoilerShow the answer
Ending spoilerReveal what happens to Chen Ting

Chen Ting tries to break up Ling Xiao and Jianjian, then softens after reading Jianjian's private online post. She attempts suicide, is rescued, and reconciles with Ling Xiao. Many Chinese viewers felt this rushed redemption excused years of cruelty toward her son.

Is there a Go Ahead season 2?

No. Go Ahead has no second season, and none has been announced. The story has been remade instead: Korea's Family by Choice (2024) adapts it with Hwang In-youp, Jung Chae-yeon and Bae Hyeon-seong, and a Vietnamese version aired on VTV3 in 2025.

Is Go Ahead based on a novel?

No. Go Ahead is an original screenplay by Shui Qianmo and Wang Xiongcheng, directed by Ding Ziguang and produced by Huace Pictures. There is no source novel to compare, so the drama's ending is the only one. That makes it unusual among popular Chinese romances, most of which adapt web novels.

Is Family by Choice a remake of Go Ahead?

Yes. Korea's Family by Choice (JTBC, 2024) is an official remake of Go Ahead. It keeps the core setup of two single fathers raising three children who grow up as siblings, then meet again as adults, but it relocates the story to Korea and runs to 16 episodes, far shorter than the Chinese original.

Who sings the Go Ahead theme song?

The opening song, "Fearless" (无畏), is sung by Ma Di, and the ending song, "I'll Be Here" (我会守在这里), is by Mao Buyi. Lead actress Tan Songyun sings the insert song "Like A Breeze", and other insert songs come from Zhao Beier, Shen Yicheng, Sa Ji and Kim Jun-sik.
