The first half is an office romance with a twist. Hu Xiu walked away from architecture to keep her family afloat, and Xiao Zhiyu hires her after seeing her old sketchbook. They share a lane house in an old Shanghai neighborhood, fight over a big competition called the Laimeng project, and keep running into each other inside the game, where he can say things in character that he can't say as himself.
The second half turns into a revenge story. Xiao Zhiyu has spent twenty years investigating a 2004 stadium collapse that his father was blamed for, and the person he suspects is his own stepfather. Hu Xiu's father turns out to be one of the survivors, which is the point where the romance gets complicated.
The game world comes back at the big emotional moments, and the drama ends there too. Chinese reviewers liked the two-world structure and Hu Xiu's growth from a burned-out assistant into a working architect. The main complaint was coincidence: he's her landlord and her boss, and a few scenes lean on familiar "rich man rescues her" beats. Dai Xu's Pei Zhen, the polished rival with a cruel streak, drew a lot of second-lead sympathy.
The Story
Hu Xiu is dumped at her own engagement party, by a voice message played to the room. The same night she wanders into a murder mystery game set in a snowy Republican-era city called Rongcheng, and the game's warlord, Qin Xiaoyi, plays her completely. The man behind the costume is Xiao Zhiyu, a star architect who becomes first her landlord, then her boss. Love Between Lines (轧戏) follows the two of them through a design competition, a rivalry with his stepbrother, and a twenty-year-old disaster that ties both their families together. Chen Xingxu and Lu Yuxiao lead this 28-episode iQIYI and Dragon TV romance, adapted from Zu Le's novel of the same name. It aired in January 2026 and streams free outside China on Viki and iQIYI.
Release Notes
Love Between Lines was produced by Linmon Media with iQIYI and Dragon TV, and directed by Cattree (猫的树). It was filmed in Shanghai from February 24 to June 17, 2025, and cut from 30 episodes to 28 before release. It premiered on January 9, 2026, on iQIYI and Dragon TV. iQIYI VIP members got four episodes on day one, then two a day, then one a day from January 22. By our count both iQIYI and Dragon TV reached episode 28 on January 25. Shenzhen TV reran it from March 25.
It reached 12.8% market share on Enlight (云合) at its peak and 484 million views on Maoyan by January 23. The Douban score was 6.4 from about 21,000 ratings on January 23. In March 2026 it was named one of the year's quality dramas at the 2026 TV Drama Quality Ceremony. Two controversies followed it: a prop university admission letter that showed a real person's address, and on-set rumors about Lu Yuxiao, which her studio denied.

The backstory comes out in pieces. In 2004 the Xincheng Stadium collapsed. Its chief architect, Qin Yuze, died the same day, and everyone believed he'd taken his own life out of guilt. Hu Ding, Hu Xiu's father, was a lighting engineer on the project. He survived with a ruined leg, and his close friend Han Chuan died. Qin Yuze's son was a boy then. His mother remarried Pei Kanghua, the head of the Zhuling Group, and the boy grew up as Xiao Zhiyu, taking her surname. As a child he overheard Pei Kanghua talking to someone who knew the truth, and he has been investigating ever since.
His partnership with Zhuling in the middle episodes is a trap. By demanding the group's full supplier list, he pushes Pei Kanghua into cutting ties with a cement plant, which leads him to its owner, Huang Yide. Huang was once the driver of the steel supplier on the stadium job, and he got rich afterward.
Then it falls apart. In episode 23 an anonymous package tells Hu Xiu's parents who Xiao Zhiyu really is, and the news goes public. Hu Ding is hurt in a car accident rushing to find his daughter, and Hu Xiu breaks up with Xiao Zhiyu. She works out that Pei Zhen leaked the story. In episode 25 she finds the hidden room in Xiao Zhiyu's home where he keeps his case files, and he finally tells her everything. Pei Zhen then leaks Zhuling's business secrets and blames Xiao Zhiyu, who is taken in by investigators.
In episode 26 the two reconcile inside the game, in snowy Rongcheng. Pei Kanghua threatens Huang Yide's family and traps Hu Xiu in a burning warehouse. Xiao Zhiyu chooses her over the evidence and gets her out, but it doesn't cost him: Hu Xiu had already guessed where Huang hid his proof, and Xu Fang finds the memory card. Xiao Zhiyu confronts Pei Kanghua at the Pei home. Pei Kanghua and the steel supplier skimmed money from the stadium job. After the collapse he pinned it on Qin Yuze, and when the two argued, Qin Yuze fell to his death. Pei Kanghua faked the suicide messages.
In episode 27 Pei Kanghua faces the law and Qin Yuze's name is cleared. Pei Zhen admits he framed Xiao Zhiyu and takes his punishment, then leaves Zhuling and Shanghai, and the stepbrothers part on good terms. Xiao Zhiyu makes peace with his mother. Hu Xiu's parents learn the truth and accept him. When her father asks about an engagement, Hu Xiu says she wants to build her career first, and Xiao Zhiyu, sulking a little, agrees.
The last episode skips ahead. Hu Xiu wins a project of her own and becomes a real architect. Xiao Zhiyu, back from a trip, turns up in the rain with flowers and takes her to the top of a tower he designed. Zhao Xiaorou and Gong Huaicong open a second shop together, with a spark between them. In the final scene the ME club opens a new game, Xiao Zhiyu walks in as a player for the first time, and Hu Xiu, dressed as the NPC, welcomes him to Rongcheng.

Love Between Lines is adapted from Ga Xi (轧戏), a novel by Zu Le (祖乐) published on Douban Reading, a Chinese platform for original fiction. There's no official English translation. We haven't read the novel, so we can't say yet how closely the drama follows it or whether the book ends the same way.

What "Ga Xi" means
The Chinese title, 轧戏, is pronounced ga xi. The first character is often read ya or zha, which is where the alias "Ya Xi" comes from. In Chinese film and TV slang, ga xi describes an actor who is shooting two productions at once and rushing between sets. Here it describes the leads, who each play one role at work and another inside the game.
Murder mystery games
Jubensha (剧本杀), "script murder," is a role-playing mystery game that boomed in China from around 2019. Players get a character and a script and try to solve a crime together. Bigger venues build full sets and hire actors as NPCs (non-player characters) who stay in role, which is Xiao Zhiyu's weekend job.
Shanghai lane houses
Xiao Zhiyu lives in a nongtang (弄堂), one of Shanghai's old lane neighborhoods. Many are lined with shikumen (石库门) houses, built from the late 1800s with stone door frames. In episode 12 he wins the Laimeng competition with a design drawn from the lanes.
