What to Expect
We haven't watched this one. This section is based on the episode summaries, the published cast list, and reviews in the Chinese press.
The first eleven episodes are one long flashback. Chen Yi bullies the girl who has moved into his home, then becomes her fiercest protector once he sees that neither of them has a parent worth the name. Expect a grim 1990s small town: a violent father, a mother who runs off, scrap collecting to pay school fees, billiard-hall fights and a teenage Chen Yi drifting into work for local gangsters.
The 2011 half changes genre. Chen Yi now runs a quiet billiard hall, his old boss Zhang Bin is leaning on him again, and Miao Jing is evasive about why she's really back. The story turns into a slow crime thriller built around a local logistics company, with the romance played out in stolen moments between stakeouts. Miao Jing's polished boss from the big city, Cen Ye, arrives in the middle to complicate things.
Chinese reviewers called the setup familiar: one more "pseudo-sibling" romance between two people raised as family, a year after Dazzling. They mostly liked the detailed character work and the two leads. It was a big hit at home, and viewers abroad rated it much higher than Douban did. Content notes: child abuse, gang violence, PTSD and a serious illness in the family.
The Story
In 1997 a girl named Miao Jing moves into a cramped flat in Tengcheng, a small town in southern China, because her mother has taken up with the man who lives there, Chen Libin. His son, Chen Yi, hates them both on sight. Over the next eight years the two kids become each other's only family, until a fire on the night her exam results come out splits them apart. Love for You (野狗骨头) picks up in 2011, when Miao Jing comes back to town, lets herself into the old flat and starts cooking dinner as if she never left. Song Weilong and Zhang Jingyi lead this 32-episode Mango TV and Hunan TV drama, adapted from Xiu Tucheng's online novel of the same name. It aired in July 2026 and streams free outside China on Viki.

The backstory comes out in pieces. In 2005, Zhai Fengmao, who owned the club where teenage Chen Yi worked, was under investigation for tax fraud and smuggled liquor. His partner, Zhang Bin, told him to find a scapegoat, then called Chen Yi to the company building at midnight on the night Miao Jing's exam results came out. The building burned and firefighters pulled Chen Yi out. Episode 28 reveals that the fire also killed Wenwen, the fiancée of police officer Zhou Kang'an. Afterwards Chen Yi secretly changed Miao Jing's university application, told her coldly that they "aren't the same kind of people", and pushed her off to university in Haicheng. He spent the missing years abroad, in a country the drama calls Jinguo, fighting in boxing matches. Baidu Baike's character profile says he spent six years working undercover for the police against Zhang Bin. The episode summaries only show him passing information to Zhou in 2011.
Miao Jing's secret comes out in episode 17. She's an auditor with Mingtong Audit, sent to audit Haoyun Logistics, which Zhang Bin secretly owns. Chen Yi lets Zhang Bin make him Haoyun's project head so he can keep her safe, while she and Cen Ye, her boss and ex-boyfriend, dig through the books. They find that Haoyun swaps license plates between identical trucks to slip past inspections. In episode 29 they find what the trucks carry: banned goods hidden inside plush toys whose barcodes start with 7, a cargo hazardous enough to make the drivers sick. Along the way Chen Yi's billiard hall is burned down by one of those drivers, and Miao Jing's mother, Wei Mingzhen, comes back into her life and dies of cancer in episode 26.
In episode 30 Zhang Bin praises Chen Yi in front of the whole company and exposes his years in Jinguo to isolate him. Chen Yi quietly passes the shipment details to Zhou. In episode 31 Zhang Bin takes Chen Yi's phone and makes him drive the shipment himself. When police checkpoints close in, Zhang Bin stabs him in the thigh and forces him to lose Miao Jing, who is tailing them, and her car crashes. She calls Zhai Fengmao, who has been hiding as a delivery man since Zhang Bin pinned his own crimes on him. At a dockside warehouse Zhang Bin tortures Chen Yi. Miao Jing knocks the knife away, but she's tied up and pushed off a ledge, and Chen Yi holds her rope. Zhai attacks Zhang Bin with a cleaver, and the police arrest them both.
Episode 32 jumps ahead a few months. Chen Yi has recovered. Zhang Bin gets life in prison for smuggling banned goods, arson and attempted murder. Zhai Fengmao, who the finale confirms set the 2005 fire to destroy evidence, also gets life, and Haoyun manager Tao Jiang gets eight years. Outside the court Zhou salutes the national emblem and finally lets Wenwen go. Miao Jing is promoted at Mingtong's Haicheng office and the couple move there. Chen Yi admits he came to watch her secretly several times while she was at university, and stayed away because his life was too dangerous. He opens a bigger billiard hall in Haicheng with Bo Zai. In the last scene, on a rooftop like the one they talked on as teenagers, Miao Jing asks him to be her husband. He kisses her as fireworks go off.

The novel behind it
Love for You adapts Yegou Gutou (野狗骨头), a novel by Xiu Tucheng (休屠城) published on the web fiction site Jinjiang Literature City (晋江文学城, JJWXC). As far as we know there's no official English translation. We haven't read the book.
Baidu Baike's character profiles differ from its episode summaries on several points. In the profiles Cen Ye secretly works with Zhang Bin and is demoted afterwards, Chen Yi is a police undercover for six years, and Miao Jing trained as an automotive engineer. Those may come from the novel or from pre-release material, but we can't confirm which, so we haven't listed them as changes.

Words and customs you'll hear
What the title means
野狗骨头 (yegou gutou) means "wild dog bone." The soundtrack is split into a "Wild Dog" chapter and a "Bone" chapter, each with its own theme song. Zhang Jingyi described Miao Jing as having jiang gutou (犟骨头), "stubborn bones," so the title most likely pairs Chen Yi, the stray, with Miao Jing, the bone he won't let go of. That reading is ours; the production hasn't spelled it out. The English title, Love for You, is Viki's and Mango TV's.
Pseudo-sibling romance
Wei guke (伪骨科) is internet slang for a romance between two people raised as relatives who aren't related by blood. Chen Yi and Miao Jing grow up in the same flat as step-siblings, with no blood tie. The trope has been everywhere in Chinese dramas lately, and one Chinese entertainment outlet complained that this was one more title in a crowded field that includes Dazzling.
The gaokao
The gaokao (高考) is China's national university entrance exam, and the score decides which universities a student can apply to. Students submit their choices after the results come out, which is how Chen Yi can quietly change where Miao Jing goes.
