What to Expect
We haven't watched this one. This section is based on the official episode synopses, Netflix's description and Chinese coverage, and we'll replace it with a verdict once we have one.
This is an office drama first and a romance second. Most episodes turn on a pitch or a project: a culture company that won't listen, an insurance client, a retailer's restructuring. Xu Chi has to win each one against colleagues who steal her ideas or freeze her out. Her first boss, Lin Long, is pregnant and afraid of being pushed aside, and she treats Xu Chi as the threat. Ye Xinzhi starts as a mentor at arm's length. The romance builds slowly and doesn't become the center of the story until the second half.
There is a lot of ensemble material. Lin Long's failing marriage, Bu Tianna's fight with her father over the family business, and Zhao Heng's courtship of her each get real screen time. Some Chinese viewers felt these side stories took too much space in the last episodes. At 20 episodes it is short by C-drama standards.
The early episodes drew praise in China for showing the pressure of consulting work honestly. The ending was more divisive: HK01 reported viewer complaints that the final twist and the reunion felt rushed. A content note: the drama deals with suicide and with trauma.
The Story
Xu Chi was a teenager when her parents divorced and her family lost its home. She grew up determined never to be the person who gets replaced. Now she is a fresh graduate from an ordinary college, and she wants into the top tier of management consulting, where firms hire almost only from elite universities. A stern executive who interviews her for a summer internship, Ye Xinzhi, tells her how to get in. She follows his advice, wins a student contest and lands a job at the consulting giant Maisi. Ye is also a partner at a rival firm, and he has his own plan: years ago his mentor made him take the blame for a disastrous project, and he has been preparing his revenge ever since. Irreplaceable (无可替代) is a 20-episode workplace drama starring Zhao Jinmai and Wei Daxun, written by Zhang Wei and directed by Chen Mingzhang and Chen Shiyi. It aired on CCTV-8 and Youku in China, and it streams internationally on youku.tv and, according to What's on Netflix, on Netflix.
Release Notes
Irreplaceable premiered on September 28, 2026, on CCTV-8 at 22:20 each night and on Youku. On Youku, members got about one new episode a day, SVIP members could watch one episode ahead, and a paid package unlocked the finale early from October 10. Baidu Baike's calendar has the last members' episodes coming out from October 14 to 17. CCTV-1 began airing it in a morning slot on October 13. The CCTV-8 broadcast ranked first or second in its time slot on the ratings days Baidu Baike lists.
According to What's on Netflix, Netflix released the first three episodes worldwide on the premiere day and planned to add more in batches over the following weeks, with Mandarin audio with Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese dubs, and subtitles in English, Arabic, French, Hindi, Polish and Traditional Chinese.
Filming began in Beijing on August 11, 2025, and wrapped on October 24, 2025. The script is original, not a novel adaptation. Xilinnayi Gao (希林娜依·高) sings the theme song, also called "Irreplaceable" (无可替代), and Shen Xiaoting (沈小婷) sings the opening song, "I Am the Coordinate" (我即坐标). The score album came out on October 3, 2026.

This account comes from the official episode synopses for episodes 13 to 20 and Chinese coverage, not from watching.
The revenge. Years earlier, Ye's mentor Wen Ruosen, a partner at the firm Boen, made Ye take the blame for a failed department-store overhaul. Ye's plan is to steer Wen's digital-collectibles business into a deal with an investor that comes with a harsh performance clause. Xu Chi helps him, and his plan moves three months ahead of schedule. Wen falls in episode 17. Before he goes, he tells Ye that the protégé he trained will one day replace him.
Xu Chi's house. Xu Chi has been trying to buy back her family's old house. In episode 16 an illegal basement dig next door causes a collapse, and the house is declared unsafe. Ye proposes with a ring and a flat he has already bought. She says she isn't ready, so he gives her the ring on a necklace to wear until she is.
The crisis. Xu Chi moves to Ye's firm, Hezong, and joins his team on a project for a large online retailer. In episode 19, a manager at the client company posts a farewell letter online and attempts suicide. He survives, badly hurt. The video he leaves names a consultant called Ye, the case goes viral, and Ye has a severe trauma reaction. He reacts strongly when the incident comes up and promises to explain something from his past later. His boss, Kai, decides to sideline him and tells Xu Chi to take over the project in secret. She agrees, to protect his career. At a press conference in the final episode she has the two firms share the blame and fund a ¥10 million program to help the client's staff adapt to AI.
The break. Ye logs into the project chat and finds he has been removed. He feels betrayed by the person he trained, just as Wen predicted. He cuts off contact and sends Xu Chi a video saying he needs time to think about his career and about them.
The reunion. Ye travels abroad to see the place behind a legend Xu Chi loves. Baidu Baike's synopsis says Iraq, the setting of the Tower of Babel story, while HK01's report says Turkey. There an old friend tells him that what couples need most is to talk. Xu Chi takes a holiday to visit the Blue Hole at Dahab in Egypt, a place Ye always wanted to see. They run into each other in front of a sign for the Blue Hole, and she runs to him. Bu Tianna and Zhao Heng arrive in time to see it.
Everyone else. Lin Long divorces her husband after he pushes her during an argument and she loses the baby. She steps down as a partner and becomes a visiting professor. In the finale Shen Jin proposes on his knees, holding a diamond ring in one hand and chicken soup in the other, and she accepts both. Bu Tianna and Zhao Heng break up under pressure from her father, then reunite at the airport in episode 19, and he leaves for a posting in Venezuela.

Words and customs you'll hear
Elite colleges and "double non"
Chinese employers often screen applicants by university. Shuangfei (双非), "double non," means a college outside both of the state's elite programs for top universities, Project 985 and Project 211. Graduates of these schools are often filtered out of top consulting firms and banks before anyone reads their résumé. That's why Ye tells Xu Chi in episode 1 that Maisi won't hire her directly and that she should win a contest to reach the final interview instead.
Consulting firms
The fictional Maisi, Boen and Hezong are modeled on the global strategy firms that advise Chinese companies on restructuring and growth. Their world of pitches, all-nighters, partners and up-or-out promotion is the drama's main setting. The Chinese title, "irreplaceable," plays on a fear common in that world: that any consultant can be swapped out for a cheaper or younger one, or by AI.
Performance clauses
The trap Ye sets for Wen relies on a duidu (对赌) agreement, a deal common in Chinese investment in which the company's owners promise to hit set targets and must pay the investor back or give up shares if they miss. It is often translated as a "valuation adjustment mechanism" or simply a "bet-on agreement."
CCTV-8
CCTV-8 is the national broadcaster's TV drama channel. A prime-time CCTV-8 slot, together with a streaming release, signals that a drama has official backing, and Irreplaceable was on CCTV's 2026 slate of major dramas.
Irreplaceable FAQ
How many episodes does Irreplaceable have?
Irreplaceable has 20 episodes, each about 45 minutes long. That's short for a Chinese drama, so the whole story runs about 15 hours, roughly half the length of a typical 40-episode series. The series has finished airing in China, and youku.tv lists all 20 episodes.
Where can I watch Irreplaceable?
Outside China, it streams on youku.tv, where we found all 20 episodes from the US on October 25, 2026, the first three free and the rest for VIP members, with English subtitles. What's on Netflix reports it is also on Netflix worldwide. In China it aired on CCTV-8 and streams on Youku.
Is Irreplaceable based on a novel?
No. Irreplaceable is an original screenplay by Zhang Wei, and Baidu Baike's review section discusses it as an original script. We haven't found any novel or web novel it is based on. The story, the consulting firms and the characters were all written for the screen.
What is the Irreplaceable episode release schedule?
In China, CCTV-8 aired it nightly from September 28, 2026, and Youku released about one episode a day for members through mid-October. What's on Netflix reported that Netflix put the first three episodes up on September 28 and would add the rest in batches. All 20 episodes have now aired in China.
