Chinese Dramas Like Nirvana in Fire

Nirvana in Fire is a political drama first. A frail strategist comes back to the capital under a new name to choose the next emperor and clear the name of an army wiped out as traitors twelve years earlier, and almost all of the action is planning. Few dramas match it, so this list looks for the parts you can find elsewhere. The closest in our catalog are Joy of Life, another clever outsider in a fight over the throne, Key to the Phoenix Heart, about a general hunting the plot that destroyed his army, and Pursuit of Jade, whose marquis digs into an old massacre and a traitor's name. Further down are dramas that share one piece: the studio, the hidden purpose or the ensemble. Nothing on this page reveals how any of these stories end.

1. Joy of Life

庆余年 · 2019 · 46 episodes
VikiVikiVikiViki

A clever outsider caught in a fight over the throne

Joy of Life is the closest match in our catalog for scale and scheming. Fan Xian, the illegitimate son of a count, grows up far from the capital, then gets pulled into court politics, a quiet war between princes and a hunt for the truth about his mother's past. Like Nirvana in Fire, it rewards close attention and has a huge ensemble, led here by Zhang Ruoyun with Chen Daoming as an unreadable emperor. The big difference is tone. Fan Xian is quick-talking and funny, so the scheming comes with jokes. This first season runs 46 episodes, and more seasons follow.

2. Key to the Phoenix Heart

雀骨 · 2026 · 28 episodes
iQIYIiQIYIiQIYIiQIYI

A general home to learn who betrayed his army

Key to the Phoenix Heart shares the wound at the center of Nirvana in Fire: an army destroyed by a plot at court. Xiao Wuyi, a commander reported killed at the border, comes back to the capital to find out who was behind the loss of 30,000 of his soldiers, and forces a marriage on Xie Jiayu, the Grand Tutor's foster daughter, because he suspects she knows something. The romance gets more room than in Nirvana in Fire, but the Empress Dowager, a rebel prince and a foreign delegation keep the politics tight. Hou Minghao and Ai Mi lead its 28 episodes.

3. Pursuit of Jade

逐玉 · 2026 · 40 episodes
iQIYIWeTVNetflixNetflixNetflix

An old massacre, a traitor's name and a hidden heir

Pursuit of Jade starts as a small-town romance, but its political plot will feel familiar. Xie Zheng, a marquis played by Zhang Linghe, is ambushed while digging into an old massacre, and the trail leads back to a general branded a traitor after a city fell seventeen years earlier. Once the story reaches the capital, a puppet emperor, a powerful chancellor and a hidden heir to the throne all scheme against each other. The heroine, a butcher played by Tian Xiwei, fights her way to a command on the battlefield. It is warmer and more romantic than Nirvana in Fire, over 40 episodes.

4. The Longest Day in Chang'an

长安十二时辰 · 2019 · 48 episodes
VikiVikiVikiViki

Dense politics and a plot you must follow closely

The Longest Day in Chang'an is for viewers who loved how much Nirvana in Fire asks you to keep track of. A condemned former soldier, Zhang Xiaojing, is given twelve hours to stop an attack on Tang-dynasty Chang'an during the Lantern Festival, working for Li Bi, a brilliant young Taoist official. Lei Jiayin and Jackson Yee lead, and the conspiracy reaches far up the court. It plays as a race against the clock rather than a slow game, and the rebuilt city is spectacular. Expect to rewind. It runs 48 episodes.

5. Story of Kunning Palace

宁安如梦 · 2023 · 38 episodes
iQIYIiQIYIiQIYIiQIYI

A soft-spoken scholar with a hidden past and a plan

Story of Kunning Palace has a male lead in Mei Changsu's mold. Xie Wei, played by Zhang Linghe, is a soft-spoken scholar and imperial tutor who hides a past and a plan of his own. Jiang Xuening, played by Bai Lu, is a minister's daughter reborn at 18 with memories of a first life in which she schemed her way to empress, and she is trying hard to stay out of the palace this time. The romance is the center here, much more than in Nirvana in Fire, but the court scheming is real. It runs 38 episodes.

6. Blossoms of Power

百花杀 · 2026 · 36 episodes
VikiWeTVVikiWeTVVikiWeTVVikiWeTV

A poisoned crown prince who plays weaker than he is

Blossoms of Power has a lead who will remind you of Mei Changsu. Xiao Huayong, the Crown Prince, played by He Yu, has been poisoned since childhood and pretends to be frailer than he is. He makes a pact with Shen Xihe, a commandery princess from the northwest, whose body now holds the sole survivor of a massacred family. The plot covers a lot of ground in 36 episodes: a ledger of officials' misconduct, an imperial marriage decree, a rebellion and an abduction. It is a romance as much as a political drama, and Meng Ziyi co-leads.

7. The Story of Ming Lan

知否知否应是绿肥红瘦 · 2018 · 73 episodes
VikiWeTVVikiWeTVVikiWeTVVikiWeTV

Same studio, with household politics instead of court

The Story of Ming Lan comes from the same studio as Nirvana in Fire, Daylight Entertainment, with Hou Hongliang producing both, and it has the same care for detail and the same patient pacing. The battlefield is different. Sheng Minglan, played by Zhao Liying, is a concubine's daughter who learns early to hide how clever she is, and the politics are those of a Song-dynasty official's household: dowries, marriages and who sits where at dinner. Her marriage to Gu Tingye, played by Feng Shaofeng, grows slowly on screen. At 73 episodes, it is an even longer commitment.

8. Story of Yanxi Palace

延禧攻略 · 2018 · 70 episodes
Prime VideoVikiVikiiQIYIVikiiQIYIVikiiQIYI

Entering the palace to uncover a family secret

Story of Yanxi Palace shares Nirvana in Fire's engine of a hidden purpose. Wei Yingluo, a sharp-tongued embroidery maid played by Wu Jinyan, enters the Forbidden City to find out what happened to her older sister, and fights back against every consort and eunuch in her way. It is faster and louder than Nirvana in Fire, a Qing-dynasty palace drama where the scheming happens in the women's quarters rather than among princes and ministers. Viewers who liked watching Mei Changsu outplay his rivals usually enjoy Yingluo doing the same. It runs 70 episodes.

9. Shadow Punisher

魅影神捕 · 2026 · 30 episodes
iQIYIiQIYIiQIYIiQIYI

A man with secret reasons, a brotherhood and a cult

Shadow Punisher is a near-fit for viewers who liked the brotherhood side of Nirvana in Fire. Li Si, a rich young man played by Luo Yunxi, joins an imperial constabulary for reasons of his own, and his hunt for the cult behind a string of uncanny murders pairs him with Meng Rui, a stern swordsman who starts out arresting him and becomes his closest partner. Like Mei Changsu, Li Si is never quite who he claims to be. It is a case-of-the-week mystery with no romance line, and at 30 episodes it moves quickly.

10. Mystic Nine

九门 · 2026 · 30 episodes
VikiVikiVikiViki

An ensemble of clan heads facing a purge

Mystic Nine is a near-fit, set in the Republican era rather than an ancient court. Zhang Qishan, the garrison commander of Changsha played by William Chan, leads the Nine Gates, a group of clan heads, on a hunt for a vanished army unit through a haunted underground tower, and then the government turns on their clans. What links it to Nirvana in Fire is the ensemble: loyalty among men and women who have fought together, old grudges, and a powerful state closing in. Expect tomb-raiding adventure more than strategy. It runs 30 episodes.

How we picked

We broke Nirvana in Fire's appeal into four parts: a lead with a hidden identity or purpose, a fight over the throne or the court, an old injustice that someone is trying to set right, and a large ensemble bound by loyalty. We checked every period drama in our catalog against those four points and put the dramas that match the most of them first. Lower picks match one or two, and their blurbs say which part fits. We left out dramas that haven't aired yet, and we didn't order the list by ratings. Use the Watch in filter at the top to see only the dramas you can stream where you are.

Questions

Is there a sequel to Nirvana in Fire?

Yes. Nirvana in Fire 2: The Wind Blows in Changlin (琅琊榜之风起长林) aired from December 2017 to February 2018. It is set decades later, with a new cast led by Huang Xiaoming and Liu Haoran, and follows the Changlin Army. You don't need to have seen the first drama, but it helps. Producer Hou Hongliang said in 2020 that a script for a third part was finished, and we haven't seen production news since.

What is the closest drama to Nirvana in Fire?

From our catalog, Joy of Life is the closest in scale: a clever lead, a fight among princes and a huge cast, though with far more humor. Key to the Phoenix Heart is the closest in plot, with a general hunting the people who betrayed his army.

Are there dramas like Nirvana in Fire without much romance?

Shadow Punisher has no romance line at all, and The Longest Day in Chang'an is driven by its conspiracy, not a love story. Joy of Life has a romance, but the politics take most of the screen time. Most of the other picks here give their couple a bigger share of the story than Nirvana in Fire does.
