What to Expect

We haven't watched this one. This section is based on the episode synopses and character profiles on Baidu Baike, the iQ.com synopsis and Chinese coverage, and we'll replace it with a verdict once we have one.

The story moves between two timelines, 1997 and 2000, and keeps cutting back and forth. The 1997 strand is the investigation: Chen Ying combs the supply section's books for proof of graft while Chen Shan follows stolen materials out of the plant. The 2000 strand opens with Chen Shan back from prison, angry and secretive, and a family split by his suspicion of Qi Mo. At 12 episodes it moves quickly, and nearly every episode ends on a new piece of evidence or a new loss.

It is as much a family drama as a thriller. The siblings aren't related by blood, a secret about Chen Ying's birth parents comes out early, and the relationship between sister and brother is the center of the show. Chinese coverage has singled out the drab, lived-in setting of a 1990s state factory town, filmed in the old Changfeng Chemical plant in Chongqing. Reception was mixed: Douban users gave it a 6.4, and on Yunhe's chart it peaked at a 3.9% share of the market.

The tone is dark and quiet rather than action-packed. Content notes: an industrial explosion, the deaths of parents, suicide, sexual harassment at work, a drunk-driving crash, a miscarriage and prison.

The Story

In the summer of 1997, in Wugang (雾港), a petrochemical town in southwest China, Chen Fu, head of the plant's engineering crew, finds that the alloy-steel flanges on a gas pipeline have been swapped for cheap carbon steel. The next morning the "713" pipeline project explodes with him on site, and he doesn't survive. The plant blames his crew, his wife Zhang Wenying, the pipeline's designer, takes the blame to protect her children, and she is soon dead too. Their adopted daughter Chen Ying, an accountant, and their son Chen Shan, a new graduate, set out to clear their parents' names with the help of an engineer, Qi Mo, and bring down the plant director. Three years later Chen Shan comes out of prison to find Qi Mo running the restructured company and married to his sister, and he starts to suspect him. Light the Dark (把黑夜点燃, Ba Hei Ye Dian Ran) is a 12-episode iQIYI crime drama from 2026 starring Jiang Xin and Chen Zheyuan, directed by Liu Xin (刘新) from an original screenplay. It aired in October 2026, and in the US it streams on iQ.com.

In Brief

Ending spoilerShow the ending in brief

Light the Dark has a bittersweet ending, according to the episode synopses on Baidu Baike and Chinese recaps. The siblings learn the truth about both of their parents' deaths and the people behind them are exposed, but their parents are gone, and the sources don't settle where Chen Ying's marriage stands.

Full Ending Explained

Full spoilersShow the full ending

This account comes from Baidu Baike's synopses of episodes 11 and 12, its character profiles, and recaps from Sohu and a Taiwanese blog, not from watching.

The staged split. In episode 11 it turns out the siblings' bitter falling-out after Chen Shan's release was partly an act. Chen Ying had spent three years quietly going through the head company's old accounts and project files, and after Chen Shan came home the two worked the case from inside and outside. Following hush money that Liu Hong had been collecting every month, they reached Geng Jian.

Zhang Wenying's death. Geng Jian, the siblings' godfather, confesses. After the explosion Wan Yang sent him to persuade Zhang Wenying to take the blame. She mocked him as a man who would always be second in command, and he strangled her with a rope, then forged a suicide note and staged the scene. Wan Yang saw it, and used it to make Geng Jian the front for his graft for years. Baike says Geng Jian later takes his own life.

Qi Mo. In episode 12 Qi Mo finally tells the siblings what he has hidden. Wan Yang had stolen his research paper and kept him from going home to see his dying father, so Qi Mo reported Wan Yang for corruption under his own name and helped the investigators find the money. Wan Yang killed himself by jumping from a building, and Qi Mo's reform plan won him the top job. On the day of the explosion, the leaking section was the one Qi Mo had been supervising. Baike's profile says his confession clears him of being the main culprit.

Sun Jie. The siblings trace a gold lock engraved with the character ying (英), the old site records and Sun Jie's years in the supply section, and the evidence points to him. Chen Shan realizes that Sun Jie, who had befriended him in prison, was angling for a shorter sentence, and that his help after their release was a way to watch the investigation. Baike says Chen Fu was "most likely" silenced by Sun Jie for reporting the bad parts, and that Wan Yang was the man pushed out in front. Sohu and the Taiwanese recap say Sun Jie is arrested, and the recap says he tried to blow the valve again before he was caught.

What stays unclear. Sohu says Chen Ying doesn't divorce Qi Mo, and the Taiwanese recap says he is sent to a cadre training course, but we haven't confirmed either. Baike's last synopsis stops at Qi Mo's confession.

Minor spoilerReveal the secret about Chen Ying's birth parents

According to Baidu Baike, Chen Ying's birth parents, Peng Da (彭达) and Feng Lan (冯兰), died in an accident caused by a design error of Zhang Wenying's, years before the story begins. Wan Yang tells Chen Shan in episode 3, Zhang Wenying admits it, and in episode 6 Chen Shan says it out loud in front of his sister, who throws him out.

Words and customs you'll hear

The title

Ba hei ye dian ran (把黑夜点燃) means "set the night alight," and the English title keeps the idea. The drama's working title was Chen Jia Wang Shi (陈家往事), "the Chen family's past." The end theme, "Ignite" (点燃), is credited to Jiang Xin on Baidu Baike.

Factory towns and restructuring

In the 1990s many Chinese towns were built around one state-owned plant that supplied jobs, housing, schools and social life. Your parents' colleagues were your neighbors, and a scandal at work was a scandal at home. Late in the decade many of these plants were restructured (改制) into companies, which is the change Chen Shan comes home to in 2000. Housing was often assigned by the employer, which is why the plant can tell the siblings to leave their flat after their parents die: the plant says it was only on loan, not assigned to the family.

Godparents

Geng Jian is the siblings' gandie (干爹), a godfather by family friendship rather than religion. The tie is informal but real, and a gandie is expected to look out for the children, which is why his place in the story matters.
